Ten Truly Gay Movies for the Holidays

Vanessa Williams as a Scrooge-like diva. Scott Wolf and Jay Mohr as lovers making a drug bust on Xmas. Judy Garland and a big trolley ride. Gay Christmas movies aren't conventional, but they sure are fun.

GAY CHRISTMAS MOVIES 1 X390 (STILL) | ADVOCATE.COM

Whether it's Vanessa Williams as a fictional pop star running away from Kathy Griffin's Ghost of Christmas Past  or Scott Wolf and Jay Mohr as lovers trying to make a drug bust on Christmas Eve, we can't promise our 10 holiday movie picks are typical — but we can promise they'll be loaded with gay.

1. Home for the Holidays — Jodie Foster makes her second outing as a director an ensemble dramedy about an out-of-work single mother (Holly Hunter) who heads home for Thanksgiving to see her eccentric family (mom and dad are Anne Bancroft and Charles Durning, while her gay brother, Robert Downey Jr., steals the film). One of the best bickering family films ever made, and proof Foster really should direct more often.

Make the Yuletide Gay is hardly the first gay Christmas movie. That feat goes to 24 Hights, which was released in 2001 and has been a cult hit ever since (and is way better than Yuletide).

The list is missing the infamous, Rudolf The Red Nose Reindeer, you know the one narrated by Burl Ives. With songs like, "Were A Couple of Misfits", "There's Always Tomorrow", "Fame and Fortune", and a plot LOADED with double meanings, it was OUR story, if there ever was one. Next time you watch it (and admit it you do), focus on the doll, who is part of the Island of Misfit Toys. While it is revealed why the other toys are there, the reason for the doll's banishment is never stated, but she does utter the line, "wake up, don't you know, it's time to come out".

None of these films are truly gay. They're all mainstream. Why is The Advocate not supporting its own community? I agree with the person below, where is Yuletide Gay, a lovely Christmas movie that even has gay in its title. What more can you ask for? After all, isn't this story called "Ten TRULY GAY Movies for the Holidays?" The Advocate/Here/Regent, you fail us again. How are ANY of these moviies gay?

I give credit to people who use proper English. People who use "2" for the word "to" or "4" for the word "for" shouldn't be taken seriously.

Dick - on what basis do you believe being gay or straight is a result of environmental factors rather than biological? Scientific research does not support your position, so I would be most interested in knowing what sources you possess that outweigh scientific studies published in peer reviewed journals of the American Psychological Association. Back on topic.... mmmm... none of these movies really appeal to me. Perhaps a new classic will emerge soon that resonates better with me. Different strokes for different folks.

hmmmmmmmmm, where do i begin? i find it INTERESTING that in the homosexual community there's division, ie, lesbian and gay, when the entire community wants equality/fair treatment. personally i dont think ppl r born with a particular like or dislike 4 either gender. its simply (or not so simply) a matter of experiences with ppl have while growing up. the only argument/reason y homosexuality should b outlawed or frowned upon is if when ppl engage in gay sex it somehow produces diseases or caauses ppl 2 become mentally unstable. i think if ppl r not socialised into being gay or straight, evryone should be naturally b bisexual. thinkabout it, u kno the cliche', its not wats on the outside but what's on the inside that matters/counts. anyone that says that and means it is suppose 2 b bisexual. but how many of us actually mean what we say. PEACE OUT
