I'm a Hustla

Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix played hustlers in My Own Private Idaho, but Advocate.com heads inside Hustlaball and talks to real hookers about the life of a sex worker.

DIAGO X390 (BRIAN JOSEPH FERREE) | ADVOCATE.COM

On October 11 the Hustlaball returned to New York, the city where it began. Now in its 12th year, the Hustlaball, according to its organizers, "brings the world of porn stars, hustlers, hookers, pimps, streetwalkers, flesh-peddlers, and other scandalous sorts to the stage and dance floor under one roof.” As hundreds danced, talked, and worked the night away, The Advocate spoke to a number of sex workers about their careers, the economy, and life under the red light.

What do you like about your job? I love my job. I love being inside the very private thoughts these people have. They hire sex workers to get something they can’t get in the real world, and the fact that I can attend to that is amazing. As an artist it really feeds me. The stuff I see is so valuable and personal. When people hire you they want a specific fantasy. They hire you to make that happen for them. It’s made me love gay men -- hell, humanity -- more in general. It’s also fun. I wouldn’t do a job I didn’t want to do. If I don’t like someone, I leave. I don’t need this, but I love it. I don’t condone degrading yourself or doing something you don’t want to do, because it is your body. What we do is very emotionally generous, because you feel things when you’re with clients. You give a lot. It’s risky to be so open, so willing to be hurt, to put yourself out there for sale. It’s very generous on the sex worker’s part. That’s why it’s so fucking expensive.

How is sex work different in the different cities you’ve worked?
Los Angeles is awful because it’s saturated with sex workers and the porn industry. People are all pains. It’s really gross. Miami is awful because people are so cheap. I’ve had guys be like, “What can I get for $150?” And I’m like, “You can go fuck yourself for $150. I’m not even going to touch you.” In Boston people are great. In D.C. people are fine. The West Coast? Not so good. The South? Awful. In New York people are professional. They sense that it’s a business. They’re paying for it, no questions. Whereas in places like L.A., they think I’m some broke-ass hooker doing this for crack, and I’m not. I’m a professional, just like they are.

I'm with you. I've been an escort for years and had a lot of different experiences. If one thing unites a huge number of my clients, it's that i helped them with something. even if it's just to get off in a tough world. often it's a lot more than that. and I don't think that just because I'm a pollyanna.

sex workers get used to things. it's partly what makes us so good - not only having sex with others, but in life, in general. you learn to go with the flow - accept others - deal with diversity - and deal with ADVERSITY. at first, when i read the mean comments from some of you here - especially about how these guys and girls LOOK - i felt bad. these escorts are putting themselves out there to help others understand the industry - not soliciting you! < it's so easy to criticize and cut people down if you're anonymous, in front of your computer screen > comments like those are pure rubbish, and i hope my peers in this article can see that. we sex workers know deep down that what we are doing is GOOD for so many people... HELPING so many people - in sexual joy, technique, closeness, or connection. fellow sex workers: keep in mind that the good you do far outweighs the negativity others try to put on us. google annie sprinkle's "whores are my heros" it's a big world out there.

Reading William Rockwell's [of $pread magazine] comments regarding the HRC, I was reminded that the brave escort who put his own life on the line by outing homophobic Rev Ted Haggard contacted HRC for assistance dealing with the media. HRC didn't even return his phone calls. While I support much of what HRC does, I do believe they need to rethink their apparent policy of turning away sex workers and other "undesirables".

whoa. katania is virulent. i'm sorry to see the hate. one reason queer people are awesome and fascinating is because our very difference is about sex. its shocking to see the same repressive sexual phobias that we've all been victimized by at one time or another reinvent themselves within our own community. a sex worker, or a "whore" as katania generously put it, does not deserve your vituperation. jesus didn't think so. neither did daniel defoe. i don't either. evaluate your prejudice.

Thanks for printing this--this was one of the most genuine articles I've seen written about sex workers and the lives they live--these are people like everyone else, doing work they either love or tolerate, depending on the day. It's clear there are people who need and want the services sex workers provide, so there's no reason to pretend their work is less valuable than other types of work.

My first thought reading this was: Wow, looks like I'll never be able to afford to try this! (Nor would I want to with any of these hustlas, but that's a separate subject I guess.) But I guess I've always been CURIOUS about what sex workers' lives are actually like - don't have enough curiosity (or money) to find out on my own, but at least I get to read a somewhat interesting article about it... gee I thought that was kind of the idea of journalism... Then I get to these OUTRAGED comments and I just wonder why some people feel so threatened.

shame on the hate here! shame! did it ever occur to you self-righteous types that not every person has the same opportunities to live even a decent life... with any kind of connection... and that *some* "sex workers" work can literally be life-saving. READ WHAT I SAID: just as valuable as a shrink or MD. please.... for heaven's sake.... get some humanity. and intelligence. and, please, spare me the blah blah about HIV etc. hello?? there is something called safe sex. maybe you are too quick to expect people to conform to YOUR model of what a gay person should be like. well, BIG NEWS. you only go around once in life. if a choice is bad for you, fine, don't do it. but, don't condemn others! wake up and knock off the political crap.

The HustlaBall was the same as it always is. Brandon works so hard to make it all come together, but we have seen it all before and nothing is new. I yawned as some chubby woman in a bustier got fucked up the ass on a couch and the rude porn actors are stars only in their own minds. I thought they were there to mingle w/ the crowd and make it a collective party but they only talked to other hustlers & porn actors and tried to hook up w/ them...sort of the worm eating it's own tail. The music was, as usual, terrible w/ a slimmed down Chi Chi LaRue proving once again she is the worst DJ in the world. The highlight of the night was Ben Andrews. He was courteous, handsome and no attitude. Next time, they need to hire some world class DJs who do not all play the same "Gay music". Different dance floors should have different dance music. Ever hear of Louis Vega or Quentin Harris or The Shapeshifters or Fred Everything? The venue need fresh blood.

Sean VAN SHUT THE FUCK UP! You're delusional my friend. Who gives a flying fuck about these WHORES, yes I said WHORES. Because that's exactly what they are, NOTHING MORE. Congratulations you can suck and fuck some old guy for some money your parents must be proud! I know who isn't proud though, the GAY COMMUNITY. We've come so far and just had a march on OCT 11, and now we are supposed to hold some sort of pride in sleazy prostitutes??? YA FRIGGIN RIGHT. Take that mentality and shove it up your ass, or pay one of these nasty "sex workers" to do it for you. I'm as liberal as it gets, I honestly could give a shit less what goes on behind closed doors, but don't serve me bullshit and call in meatloaf, because not only are you offending gay men and woman by calling prostitution a "sexuality" but your also insulting us by glorifying the act of sex for money!
