Crystal Chappell Says Goodbye to Otalia

Crystal Chappell heads back to Days of our Lives , leaving gay soap fans saddened that it's Light s out for daytime's same-sex super couple Otalia.

One thing is crystal-clear -- no other actress on daytime right now can generate a buzz quite like Crystal Chappell. In news that rocked the soap world on June 11, Chappell announced to TV Guide magazine that she was returning to the role that started her career on the soaps -- Dr. Carly Manning on Days of our Lives . While many celebrated that one of Days ' legendary heroines was headed back to Salem (Chappell played Carly for three years from 1990 to 1993), at the same time, the mourning process began. This announcement signaled the end of the line for Guiding Light 's Otalia, 2009's super couple of the soaps.

Since 1999, Chappell has played Olivia Spencer for all she's worth and then some, delivering one unforgettable performance after another. When the GL powers that be agreed to write a long arc love story between two women and put it on the air, they entrusted it in the capable hands of Chappell, along with her new on-screen acting partner, Jessica Leccia (Natalia). Over the past several months, daytime, mainstream, gay, and straight fans alike have connected with the unique relationship, played with all the twists and turns of two people finding love and acceptance with each other. Otalia's popularity has grown so much that at this point, it's a worldwide phenomenon.

In this exclusive interview for Advocate.com, Chappell sets the record straight on her decision to take the Days gig, her efforts to keep Otalia on the air any way she could, what this means for the end of Guiding Light , and the importance of Otalia's love story.

With husband Michael Sabatino (who played Carly's husband Lawrence Alamain on Days ) and her two kids in tow, Chappell makes the move back to California -- a fresh start and a chance to revisit a primo role -- one that, at one point, had Carly buried alive.

Advocate.com:This is great news that you are coming back to Days as Carly. Was it an easy decision?
Crystal Chappell: It was. I was looking for a job, and it was one of those things that happened. I was in L.A., and I was driving by NBC to go to another meeting, and I thought, Gary Tomlin [co-executive producer of Days ] is there , and I wanted to say hi. I went about my day and found out that same day that he called my contact information so he could talk to me. I am trying to listen to the signals in my life, and I thought it would be very interesting to go back and play this part after 16 years of being away. I am really happy to be going back, but it's taking me a few days to get to this place. The day the news came out last Friday, I told my cast mates and they were unbelievably supportive and lovely, but I think the thing that dawned at me at that moment was, this was going to be the end of the character of Olivia. I kind of went through this little wallow over the weekend and went, Oh my God! This is so sad for me!

Gay fans have been so invested in Otalia's story. We had such high hopes for it. Now that fans see it's the end of the line for Otalia, in some ways it's been so devastating… and obviously devastating for you.
Absolutely! We all have known since April 1st that our show was canceled, and we have all known there was an end date. We all had hopes that the show would continue. I know Jessica Leccia, Ellen Wheeler [executive producer], and Jill Lorie Hurst [co-head writer] all wanted the story line and the show to continue. But as far as I know, as of right now, we all finish taping August 7th. I would love for the show to continue, but unfortunately, or fortunately, I have to work. It became a practical decision, and I don't know about Guiding Light being picked up.

People felt that if Otalia can't save the show, then the show is not being saved!
Obviously, we talked many times that it is an extremely important story, especially Jessica and myself. I can only look at it and go, I feel really privileged that I got to play it and be a part of it, and enjoy the time I have left with it. But, it will forever be my favorite experience and favorite story. It's due in part to the fans and how they have been, and how positive they have been.

I am absulutley dreading the final day of GL. Honestly, I know cc is going to DOOL but nothing will ever be the same as Otalia. I mean cc is a excellent actress and I am sure she can bring the ratings up at DOOL but I will have a really hard time seeing her as anything other than Otalia. I think DOOL should continue the Otolia storyline. Wow, the ratings would soar. Never really been a DOOl fan but guess I am gonna be since cc is going back. Ya know, it would be nice if we could see more Otalia. We get 2 mabye 3 days of them a week. Seriously, this is the best storyline in datetime soaps. And when it ends it will almost be like two of my best friends breaking up. The heartbreak!!!!!

Crystal Chappell deserves every accolade for Otalia and her skill in general. But I must say that the Otalia storyline is slowly derailing. In my opinion, if TPTB or the writers were not fully committed to portraying a complete relationship going into this, they shouldn't have done it at all. And yes, I am referring to the physical. You can say that there are still 2.5 months of episodes to go, but the fact that they haven't kissed at this stage is a mockery of female desire and a slap in the face to fans. The non-kissing is distracting to the point of overshadowing anything that is good. And that's not all. With respect to the unspoiled, I will only say that the most recent spoilers and possible future events are, IMO, a further insult to fans and the characters themselves. Early Otalia deserved all its praise and more, but please Advocate ... don't be silent about the obvious double standard and the insulting plotting. Soapy writing is one thing, but this latest is TOO MUCH.

I am a first time soap watcher. I came across Otalia through reading recaps from AE and I got intrested, it has only been four months, I had to go back and look at where it started from, which took me two days. I was so impressed, liked the characters so much, I think Crystal Chappel and Jessica Leccia are great actors I loved the story line, but I must say the angst got to me at times. I don't know if I'll do another soap, but I wish the best to Crystal and Jessica. Thank you for your caring. Much love and luck.

This delightful interview emphasizes to me, once again, that straight allies are ESSENTIAL if we are to achieve equal rights and acceptance. No matter how we storm, scream, write letter, beg, suffer, and come out, life-changing, true civil liberties and reforms cannot happen without those wonderful heterosexual people like Crystal Chappell who see us for who we are, and champion our causes by telling our stories. Thank you, Guiding Light and it's actresses and writers, for Otalia!

I only started watching GL with all the vids on you tube, but the Otalia story line is so well written and acted, and respectful and very true to life about 2 women who have been straight all their lives, to fall in love.

Crystal is the most amazing and good hearted actress in the world. We love you with all our hearts. I will follow you to DOOL or anywhere in the world for that matter. My heart breaks at the impending September day when the light goes out. I am so moved by you and your work please continue to bring the passion and pleasure that you do to the screen. I simply hope and pray that Days brings Jessica on with you, then my heart won't continue to break in a million pieces as it is right now.

I agee with CC,why not have Jessica appear with her on Days? Let's ask the prods. to invite Jessica on that soap. Since only the prospect of seeing them work together again will get me to watch another soap after the heartbreak over losing GL & since DOOL is not my cup of tea anyway & I fear they just won't give CC the quality material she deserves. Why not at least have JL appear in a limited arc as a terminally or critically ill patient in Dr. Carly's care? JL could play that sooo well. With their chemistry, that kind of story could be extraordinarily poignant. & would continue, though in a lesser & limited fashion, the great team they've become. Days wants to boost their stagnant ratings by the coup of re-acquiring CC, well, if they really want a ratings boost--why not give us both halves of the hottest story in daytime (and the most important story in all of tv period at the moment) in the kind of scenario that would again touch our hearts?

Michael, I always love your submissions! Crystal Chappell is the quintessential actress. She wears each role so well that you forget she is acting. Though the end of Otalia seems near, I will never forget the moving story nor the incomparable work of Soap Diva Chappell (plus Jessica Leccia and Jill Lorie Hurst). Surely, Crystal is a shoe-in for a 2010 Emmy. She is the real deal! I remember her fondly from her portrayal of Carly Manning in the 90s; however, I have fallen head over heels for her as Olivia Spencer - from the beginning. The degree to which she as embraced her fans is staggering! Not one to join fandoms or jump on the various actor-love-bandwagons, I was shocked when I realized that I simply couldn't help but join the Big Purple Nation and shower Crystal with the same love and energy that she imparts to her fans. As a result, I will follow and support her wherever she goes and will continue to dream those big purple dreams! Thank you Michael, and thank you Crystal!

Thanks Michael for interviewing Ms. Chappell. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I could watch Crystal and Jessica 24/7. They're great together, but...... Crystal darling - you can't say things like "I hope the fans will be OK with the ending" for Otalia. Don't forget you're dealing with "invested" fans who will now spend every waking moment writing and calling CBS/GL writers, or whoever will listen, until the bitter end to let them know that we expect and deserve nothing less than a deliriously ecstatic over-the-top happy ending for Otalia.
