Soapside: Advocate's Guide to Daytime

Behind the scenes of Venice with Chappell & Company, soaps lose more gay characters with exit of ATWT’s Forbes March, One Life’s Kish take a giant leap and Brandon Beemer does good for gay rights and gets nearly naked.

Last week I took a trip to Venice. No, not Venice, Italy ... Venice Beach, Calif., to go on location and behind the scenes of Crystal Chappell’s new Web series, Venice. The highly online soap is slated to debut later this month. I caught up with the all-star daytime drama cast to get some insight, scoops, previews, and thoughts on this project that has captivated the LGBT audience, starting with Chappell, who says the series took on a life of its own, in part due to her time as Olivia, half of the same-sex pairing Otalia on Guiding Light.
 
“During my time at GL it was overwhelming getting letters from all over the world. It just touched me, and I thought we can create something new here, and create a story of our own and have control over it; to kiss and not to kiss, to take your top off or not take your top off,; whatever we want to do, we get to do. I find the Web intriguing, and so I hooked up with my writing partner and got this up and running.”

Crystal tells me how much it touched her to hear many lesbians’ true-life stories and the struggles of gays for equality.
 
“To me, it’s a gift that has been given to me. I am grateful for the information I learned. It is heartbreaking to hear people tell me that they are being judged because of their sexual preference or being chased down the street by pickup trucks because of who they are, and it just makes me want to cry. It’s the injustice of not being allowed to be who you are. I am proud to be able to do this with my friends.”
 
And those friends include some top soapers: Jessica Leccia, Gina Tognoni, Galen Gering, Nadia Bjorlin, and Venice writer-producer Kim Turrisi, who have helped Chappell’s online dream come to life.
 
“I generally respect all these people. I like them, and they know how to have fun and bring the work. You can count on them. When we explained the project and why it’s happening, we directed them to our fun splash page. That is all we originally had to show them. We had people in over 85 countries just viewing the splash page, and the more we did this, it became very interesting. It became more expanded, and we realized there is really a need for this. All the actors I contacted loved the script, and they did it as favor to me and then came with questions and ideas and everything to make it come together.”

In Venice, Crystal will play Gina, an out lesbian who has a set of problems that have nothing to do with her sexuality.
 
“She is hugely dysfunctional. She has turned out to be the most flawed but the most serious of all them. I like to give my characters a sense of humor, but the characters around her are fun and lovely. She is the one who is struggling the most. Gina is comfortable with who she is, but she is not comfortable in relationships and the other people in her life. She does not know how to live with disapproval.”

    I wish to amend my previous comments about "ATWT". Although the soap is one of the nastiest shows on TV, it would have only gotten worse is they had listened to Forbes. True, the show is not going to keep Luke and Noah gay for too long. They're going to make the characters straight or bi very soon. Thus they'll be worsening the image of gay men, who are not homophobic or homosexually abstinent, under 50, or HIV positive. My white top partner certainly aren't Luke and Noah nor will we ever be.

    I also agree with Forbes that if Luke and Noah are gay, it wont last long. They're bound to go straight or bi anytime very soon, especially on a straight program. Gay characters are not even gay on gay programs. Just my two cents.

    Let me first say that I hate 'As The World Turns." It one of the nastiest daytime TV soaps on the air today. I'm a "The Young and the Restless" gay man actually. But Forbes March, formerly of ATWT, almost Had me duped until he opened up his mouth. According to him, all the gay soap characters should be flamboyant, under 50 years old, sexually active, white, rich males. As a gay black actor, I resent being unemployed that way. And, also, according to Forbes, all black people are straight. Why didn't he say Luke and Noah are as gay as Joel Osteen. March's rant made me think that I again needn't bother to watch ATWT because there's nothing in it for a 50 year old gay black man, such as myself, and the 53 year old white top boyfriend who dates him, such as my boyfriend Bob. No wonder Forbes is out-of-work. I agree that Luke and Noah should be less "J Crew" and more "Dolce, Gucci and Guess."

    because i love Luke and Noah so much, i was originally happy to hear the character of Mason would be leaving the show. his hitting on Noah was getting on my nerves, because i want him to be happy with Luke. but after reading the comments of the actor who played Mason, i feel kinda bad about that now. i did always get the feeling that there was something missing with this character. and the way Forbes describes it, his ideas would've made him way more interesting and exciting. on the other hand, with some of the spoilers i've read for ATWT, it looks like things are gonna get TOO exciting for Luke and Noah... and not in a good way! oh the drama... how did i ever let myself get hooked on another soap opera!? : )

    Thanks for the wonderful Venice interview. I am super excited about the show and can hardly wait for the eps to hit the web. Crystal Chappell & co are just an amazing bunch - every single one of them! Can't believe she got the cast she got to donate their time an talent for the show. Heart them all.
