Gene Robinson's Invocation at the Inauguration's Opening Ceremony

Following is the text of the invocation given by Bishop V. Gene Robinson at the opening ceremonies of President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration Sunday, January 18. Robinson delivered the prayer at the base of the Lincoln Memorial while facing a crowd nearly a million people strong that filled a stretch of the National Mall all the way to the base of the Washington Monument.

Good afternoon,

Before this celebration begins, please join me in pausing for a moment to ask God’s blessing upon our nation and our next president.

Oh God of our many understandings, we pray that you will bless us with tears -- tears for a world in which over a billion people exist on less than a dollar a day, where young women in many lands are beaten and raped for wanting an education, and thousands die a day from malnutrition, malaria, and AIDS.

Bless this nation with anger -- anger at discrimination at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants; women; people of color; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

Bless us with discomfort at the easy simplistic answers we prefer to hear from our politicians instead of the truth about ourselves and our world, which we need to face if we are going to rise to the challenges of the future.

Bless us with patience and the knowledge that none of what ails us will be fixed anytime soon and the understanding that our next president is a human being, not a messiah. Bless us with humility, open to understanding that our own needs as a nation must always be balanced with those of the world.

Bless us with freedom from mere tolerance, replacing it with a genuine respect and warm embrace of our differences.

Bless us with compassion and generosity, remembering that every religion’s god judges us by the ways we care for the most vulnerable. And God, we give you thanks for your child Barack, as he assumes the office of the president of the United States. Give him wisdom beyond his years, inspire him with President Lincoln’s reconciling leadership style, President Kennedy’s ability to enlist our best efforts, and Dr. King’s dream of a nation for all people.

Give him a quiet heart, for our ship of state needs a steady, calm captain. Give him stirring words; we will need to be inspired and motivated to make the personal and common sacrifices necessary to facing the challenges ahead.

Make him color-blind, reminding him of his own words that under his leadership there will be neither red nor blue states but a United States. Help him remember his own oppression as a minority, drawing on that experience of discrimination that he might seek to change the lives of those who are still its victims.

Give him strength to find family time and privacy and help him remember that even though he is president, a father only gets one shot at his daughters’ childhoods. And please God, keep him safe. We know we ask too much of our presidents and we’re asking far too much of this one; we implore you, oh good and great God to keep him safe. Hold him in the palm of your hand that he might do the work that we have called him to do. That he might find joy in this impossible calling and that, in the end, he might lead us as a nation to a place of integrity, prosperity, and peace.

Amen.

Ahead of Tuesday's inauguration, Sunday's concert played on all the JumboTrons across the National Mall, including Rev Gene Robinson's invocation. So at least the million or so assembled in DC for the inauguration had an opportunity to witness Robinson's prayer.

A miscommunication about whether to include Robinson's prayer in the broadcast is plausible. The Obamas not even being there for it is not. Bad form Obama.

I agree with Boris. Had Pastor Warren said Amen at the end of the first prayer (there were at least three cobbled together), he would have done a credible job. As a pastor, the only time I resort to the Lord's Prayer is when I run out of something to say. (The people that know me will tell you that this is seldom...). And I NEVER use the Lord's prayer in an interfaith setting. The other criticism I have is that when you start looking at the crowd, you are no longer praying...you are performing. Rev. Lowrey, who gave the benediction, out-passes, out-classes and definitely out-sasses anything that Pastor Warren could have conceived. I trust President Obama is going to ultimately get it right and we need to give him time regarding lgbt issues. His wife isn't going to let him back down on anything involving equal rights and inclusion.

No matter what you say about President Obama promises and his ability to full fill them, you need to give him a chance to back up his words. Actions at this time and state of our Country will be slow moving, but that doesn't mean thing will not get done in our favor. As a gay man I am not the only person in the United States who has dealt with the pain of DISCRIMINATION. But please remember for the first in our Country history on Election night President elect Obama Thanks his GAY brother and sisters along with everyone else. And he did it again today in his speech, no other President has ever includes gays as part of this Country or in their Speech, I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING. We have a President who thinks Gays are Americans, he made history for me. Have a Gay day, Love to you all even the hater.

Separation between church and state is one of the main reasons there is a United States- take God off the money- and make it illegal to bring god into any civil or governmental ceremony. SPain had the Inquistion- hence we have the spanish and portueguese americas- and england had the reformation and the war of the roses- and hence we have new england (Quakers, Shakers, Puritans). The day church and state are separated- we have a chance to celebrate civil and human rights

Dale - you are an ass. Grow up. Obama has nothing but words for the GLBT community. His actions instead, have been nothing but insulting. I regret voting for him and I really don't care what the hell the man does anymore. As far as I am concerned, he's a lying, manipulative opportunist.

This should have been the prayer at the inauguration today, not Rick Warren's.

What's new folks?! They want our votes, but not us. We are a minority that will never be understood or accepted as we are. It's enough to know that God loves his gay children too!! But it's time to put our Country first and our hurt aside. Step back and give our new President the time he needs to bring our country back from near ruin!! Christians are not the problem...It's the ones saying they are Christians...but do not follow in Christ footsteps nor heed his words that are the problem.

Don't mind the idiot from Mission Viejo, Dale Anderson. This piece of bland milk toast lives in a right wing bigoted community that makes Stepford look exciting. Nothing of any value has or will come from this place void of any diversity, education, or culture. There's not one restaurant there not part of a dreary chain. When one thinks of this designed community, one thinks of cheap plastic. If I had to guess, Dale is a member of the exclusive Saddleback Megachurch, an exclusive site full of frauds, fakes, and one anti-christ.
