In a shocking
announcement on Friday, Alaska governor and former vice
presidential candidate Sarah Palin announced she is resigning
from office.
Palin was vague about
her reasons for stepping down, saying she felt she could make
more changes by working outside of government.
The announcement has
stirred speculation that she is focusing on a bid for the 2012
Republican nomination for president, though doing so after
resigning her post as governor would make any bid for the White
House an uphill battle.
Spokesman Dave Murrow
said that Palin will step down on July 26 and Lt. Gov. Sean
Parnell will be inaugurated at the governor's picnic in
Fairbanks at the end of the month.
Palin was popular among
conservatives when Republican presidential nominee John McCain
first announced she'd be his running mate, but her
popularity faded over the course of the campaign as she became
a frequent punch line for liberal political strategists. She
supported numerous antigay platforms during the 2008 election
but always maintained she had
many friends who are gay
.
