A congressman whose
district includes the Oceanside area of Southern
California is requesting that the Department of Defense
investigate whether a gay sailor who was found dead on Tuesday
at Oceanside's Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base was the
target of a hate crime.
Rep. Bob Filner,
chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, made the
request after local activists demanded he intervene, according
to the Associated Press.
Seaman August Provost,
29, told his family that he was being harassed by someone on
base. Earlier reports show that Provost was out to some fellow
sailors who knew about his partner, Kaether Cordero.
A person of interest
has been taken into custody, but no formal charges have been
made.
