Rep.: Investigate Murder of Sailor

A congressman whose district includes the Oceanside area of Southern California is requesting that the Department of Defense investigate whether a gay sailor who was found dead on Tuesday at Oceanside's Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base was the target of a hate crime.

Rep. Bob Filner, chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, made the request after local activists demanded he intervene, according to the Associated Press.

Seaman August Provost, 29, told his family that he was being harassed by someone on base. Earlier reports show that Provost was out to some fellow sailors who knew about his partner, Kaether Cordero.

A person of interest has been taken into custody, but no formal charges have been made.

How do you do a investigation into a hate crime when some of those that may know something about the case could be discharged for coming forward with information if they themselves are gay. This is nothing more than showing that DADT is Legislative Murder. It is time for Obama to sign a executive order to Stop DADT... Until then there is no way to get a fair and bias investigation of this crime. Obama and The US Senate and Congress " this mans blood is on your hands".

Good for the Congressman who is leading this investigation of a hate killing while this sailor was standing duty for the U.S. at Pendelton. The Cpt. at P. said there is no reason to call it a hate crime. It's time for Congress to get into this outrage of DADT, and sweep it out fast! The GLBT are part of every Profession and job position in America and they don't have to worry that they may be shot while they are working, or do they??

I hope justice is done for Seamen Provost. They need to put a stop to DADT and any service members who choose to get out as a result will be replaced by gays and lesbians who want to serve their country openly. I am in the Navy and hope this happens soon for the protection of the gay cummunity in the military.

Unfortunately, Camp Pendleton is under the jurisdiction of State Senator Mark Wyland who is a proud sponsor of the anti-gay Proposition 8. I wouldn't be surprised if there is an immediate attempt to cover this up as simply a crime but not a hate crime.
