Dina Matos, the ex-wife of gay former New Jersey governor James McGreevey, said Wednesday that the state senate was right to reject the marriage equality bill last week.

According to the Daily Record, Matos made the remark in an interview before her speech to a service organization in Morristown.

"We have the civil union law in place, which I think is wonderful," said Matos, the Daily Record reported.

"I was raised a Catholic," she said. "I grew up in the church, so I believe in traditional marriage between a man and a woman."

Matos shares a daughter with McGreevey, who is now seeking to become an Episcopal priest and is in a relationship with a man whom he says he would like to marry.

According to the Daily Record, Matos also said Wednesday that if she were to do it over again, she might not stand by McGreevey's side as she did in 2004 when he proclaimed that he was gay.

The church you follow has consistently and throughout the world shielded, aided and abetted child rapists for decades, probably centuries, yet you consider their teachings to be worthy of your position to deny other people rights? How sad.falsefalseThomas Gregtburke@comcast.netFloriDuh1/14/2010 9:59:55 AM166.137.11.116Sad woman... If she wants our nation to follow her religious beliefs than clearly she is opposed to the US Constitution... Why does she hate America? falsefalseDanieldanw456@msn.comAlbany, NY1/14/2010 10:22:50 AM64.61.29.6Her story, which is sad, is all the more reason why Marriage Equality is a necessity. If gay marriage is recognized, more people will be living their lives openly and honestly. Hiding in denial and living a sham life only opens the door to despair, depression, and eventually devastation for all the parties involved. FULL equality is necessary for people to feel that they are a vital, recognized, integral part of our society. As long as there are half rights, part protections, and quasi unions we will always be on the edge and people not willing to take on others disdain will live their lives hiding in lies. Sad as it is, it is a large part of our gay history! We need Full Equality!falsefalseRed Sevenred7eric@aol.comWashington, DC1/14/2010 10:24:48 AM198.22.197.50The more you learn about "traditional marriage," the more you realize that what we call marriage today (a union of two loving adults) has only been around for a couple hundred years. Many of the heroes of the Bible did not subscribe to the one-man-one-woman structure of their so-called "traditional marriage." And Dina, honey - perhaps if gay marriage had been legal when you were a teenager, your ex-husband might have learned that there's nothing wrong with being gay at a young age, and would have never needed to pull you into his own self-delusion brought about by homophobia and heterosexism. Ever think about that?falsefalseBillcoda9524@yahoo.comarlington1/14/2010 10:43:45 AM71.163.36.25Are her comments a suprise? I have seen this wicked lady on various talk shows (most recently, the Joy Behar Show) and she never hesitates to say that she has "no use" for gays and especially the rights of gays. She's nothing less than dangerous in my opinion.falsefalseJanetjmcgrath@clearwire.netBoston1/14/2010 11:38:18 AM96.24.86.108Who really cares what she thinks. I pity her children whose relationship with their father and his fiance she is poisoning. falsefalseLuis Bokibokiluis@yahoo.comSan Francisco1/14/2010 12:08:47 PM24.7.59.111I give her more the space to express what she feels than that cheap trick who lost the Miss California crown. I will not pile on against this woman considering her story. I find it unnecessary that The Advocate would find this not only newsworthy, BUT, headline newsworthy. I mean, does this really come as a surprise all things considered. I fall into the camp where we should all have civil unions and save the "M" word for religion and its hierarchy of hypocrisy. And yes, I do understand that as long as the word/concept exists, then it should be "for all". But for The Advocate to further this story with a headline posting, reeks of a degree of self-serving prophecy.falsefalseNathanbullspup@live.comLake Worth1/14/2010 12:11:35 PM32.97.152.254Because she has been tainted by politics, who knows what her real motives are. On the surface, she seems like a mindless idiot, simply regurgitating beliefs and too stupid to realize that her utter mindlessness is the reason she married a gay man in the first place. She has learned nothing from her experiences and will undoubtedly be burned again, while doing nothing to prevent it beforehand. She is a pathetic black hole and I have no sympathy for her.falsefalseJayJAG10011@aol.comNew York1/14/2010 12:13:53 PM67.99.181.177Of course the bitch won't support gay marriage. Her husband left her for another man - and he's happier now than he's ever been. Who asked her opinion anyways? falsefalseRobertloiu78@yahoo.comBloomfield, NJ1/14/2010 12:20:40 PM173.54.192.192Hey Dina, did you ever think that if America wasn't such a homophobic place, Jim McGreevey wouldn't have had to find a woman to marry in order to get himself elected Governor of New Jesey? There's no way McGreevey would have even been nominated----much less win the election--- if he were an openly gay man. You're entitled to your opinion, but just remember how homophobia ultimately affected you and your life. falsefalseFranzfranz.wozzeck@gmail.comSeattle1/14/2010 12:33:11 PM24.35.115.139First of all I think McGreevey was a coward for stepping down. He didn't use state funds for prostitutes, wasn't sleeping around with his staffers wives...or husbands, didn't fondle teenage interns or go AWOL to meet his lover in Argentina. He started off the speech, NOT that he committed adultery, but that he was gay. That he was gay was the big deal. Also I never understand that quote, oh I was born and raised Catholic. I hear Academics, politicians, and rappers say that. What does that mean? It's like, I know equality is right, but I'm Catholic. Is that supposed to be some type of exoneration or immunity. And becoming and Episcopal Priest is ridiculous. Why is it that people have a sexual affair and always think that the priesthood will always fix it? AS far as Ms McGreevey, well DUH, gay marriage in her mind is a closet homosexual who has a kid with you and then sleeps around with a guy.falsefalseJessica Kjessiegrrl@yahoo.comNJ1/14/2010 12:45:22 PM130.219.8.254Dina is extremely bitter about the whole thing. I wouldn't expect any thing else to come out of her crappy mouth. The crap she tried to sue for in divorce was ludicrous. falsefalseDale Pflumdpflum@comcast.netBoynton Beach, FL1/14/2010 12:47:58 PM173.9.174.250Dina is a very bitter and angry woman. Such homophobia only leads to hate. I was raised Catholic and did what good Catholic boys do if not to become a priest - I did the respectful and expected thing - I married a good Catholic girl and had two children. When I was 10 years into the marriage, I finally accepted that I was gay. In large part because of all the homophobia in the Catholic Church and rural southern Indiana, many people suffered (not just myself) which led to a divorce. Now I am a happy gay man with a partner and because of the likes of Dina, I cannot be married. Enough is enough of the homophobia as in Dina and the Catholic Church that leads to hate.falsefalselavillaslavillas@yahoo.comBloomfield1/14/2010 12:56:26 PM98.118.193.178This is from a woman who has a three way with another man while being married? John Boswell's book Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe describes them and has several same-sex vows in the appendix, very interesting to read. In his view, the ceremonies were viewed by the public as marriages and included several marriage rituals. So the right-wing claim that Christianity has opposed same-sex marriage for 2,000 years is not based on fact. They've actually made that flimsy argument several times in the Prop 8 trial. Great he came out and did our gay cause some good.. But he also dumped his wife for another man. How do you think that feels your partner who you love and have a child with tells you he's into men.
