HRC Plans Campaign Against Military Ban

HRC HEADQUARTERS X390 (FLICKR) | ADVOCATE.COM

In response to President Obama’s call in the State of the Union address to end “don’t ask, don’t tell,” the Human Rights Campaign Wednesday night announced a campaign targeting the antigay policy. The Voices of Honor campaign “will organize veterans across the country, generate media coverage, and build focused campaigns in key states that will be critical to the final votes in the House and Senate,” the group announced in a release.

Said HRC president Joe Solmonese: “The commander in chief sent a clear message tonight that in a time of war, what matters is that our men and women get the job done — not whether they’re gay or straight. Our Voices of Honor campaign will bring about much needed action to end this law that the vast majority of Americans oppose. Our country simply cannot afford this discriminatory law that hurts military readiness by denying patriotic men and women the opportunity to serve. Ridding our laws of discrimination that weakens our national security will require continued leadership from the president as well as congressional allies.”

Where has HRC been all this time while Servicemembers Legal Defense Network has been working tirelessly on this issue? Now that there is a real chance DADT might be repealed, HRC shows up?

Why is that HRC only speaks up when they see an opportunity to make money ? They are always looking to grab on to someones coats tails and ride it to the bank or to take credit for work they haven't done.....They make me sick The whole board and especially JOE needs to go... I'm not giving them another dime for another dinner party so Joe can dress up and kiss ass with the politically connected in Washington...all to fulfill his vain desires and to make him feel like he's someone important...HE'S NOT !... He and HRC are so ten mins ago and they stopped speaking for the greater LGBT community long ago. Why the News media hasn't figured this out still confuses me....Thier are many orgs that have a better understanding and whom fight harder anddo more for the LGBT community then HRC........ I guess Joe will have to Cut back on the Kool Aide or turn out some lights on the MotherShip this year since they are running out of money....LOL

What took them so long? Maybe it's because Obama said something they are less worried they will be cut out of the cocktail circuit. So now they will use this as a fund-raising hook and dry up money that would go to the organizations who are really working on it. Fooey on HRC; they are a closeted organization that could not even bring itself to name us in its name.

What took them so long? I hope they don't give Washington DC a penny until this unconstitutional law that wastes our tax dollars, weakens our military, and discriminates against people born gay/lesbian is repealed in full.

Sounds like the Call to Duty tour from a few years back - some of the same speakers too. Nice of HRC to finally get on the fucking ball with this. I'm sure they will be fierce advocates and really push Congress hard on this one. Like they did with the MREA in 2005... 2007... and 2009. Not holding my breath. Right now, it's all just words.

It would be nice to get some real, federall pro-gay legislation on the books. I myself date a soldier and it is annoying to have to hide our relationship in public, especially when he is in uniform. I see issue with the HRC getting soldiers, even veterans, to openly campaign. I wonder if they would be at risk to lose their veteran benefits? The campaign sounds boring as well, I suggest "NO SHAME IN SERVICE".
