Born-Again Baldwin Against Gay Marriage

STEPHEN BALDWIN X200 (COURTESY: NBC)

Stephen Baldwin became a born-again Christian after 9/11, and in a new interview with The Guardian, the actor says his faith doesn’t allow him to support same-sex marriage and that he has respect for anyone who can reject the gay lifestyle.

"To turn away from that lifestyle is astonishing,” Baldwin tells The Guardian.

The reporter asks Baldwin what he would do if one of his daughters came out as a lesbian and the other went to work as a stripper.

"Jesus or no Jesus, if my kid started working in a strip club, I'd beat her ass," he says. "Now, the other question is interesting and culturally relevant. I have two or three very dear friends who are homosexual and they know I'm born again and we have an understanding that we're just not going there ... "

When talk turns to same-sex marriage and civil unions, Baldwin responds:

"I believe that the family unit has fundamentally been the most positive thing for society and I don't believe that any minority has the right to create changes that impact on the majority. That's really the only issue for me."

Baldwin’s brothers Alec and William are both outspoken supporters of gay rights. Stephen Baldwin’s breakout role was in the film Threesome, in which he and actor Josh Charles share an intimate moment.

Nathan, I never thought Deiter or anyone else was trying to get more rights than me. I'm a gay man who understands gay rights and gay activism. Deiter and his kind just don't understand that when they paint a group of people (religious, straight, gay, of color, whoever) they are stereotyping others in the same way they complain about ourselves being stereotpyed. So what they are doing is being hypocrites. By your way of thinking, you must hate all heterosexuals, all religious people, etc. because they are (perceived to be) against your ideology. If they hate you, you must hate them, so you're no better!! I just don't believe that calling people names or haters moves the dialogue along a path that helps us. It's as simple as that. But I don't expect you to understand that hatred from either side hurts us. And it'd coming from the LGBT community as well.

It's GLBT people AND their straight allies that make up the GLBT civil rights phenomenon. I believe that makes up the majority of people in any place where GLBT issues make headway.

It's nice how some Jesus lovers don't understand that God doesn't make mistakes with what he creates. I especially like that his so-called Christian beliefs would allow him to express his ability in beating one of his own children for becoming a stripper. Extremism of any kind is ridiculous. I guess he figures his children are his property to do with as he pleases if they displease him. God made us all, it's blasphemous to judge Him. Either God knows what he is doing or he doesn't, you can't have it both ways. We should consider that God also made the Devil and in so doing gave him permission to run afoul. He didn't have to do that, but in so doing He is responsible for any harm the Devil has and may cause. The point is that it is not for us to judge what God does and each journey to discover God is a very personal one. It is not for us to condemn love in any form that is concensual between adults. We can't help who we fall in love with. God puts people in your life for a reason.

Jay doesn't seem to understand the difference between anger and hatred. Jay, D doesn't think he should have more rights than you, he is simply angry with you. I believe that opposition to gay marriage is rooted in hatred. If you actually listened with a clear mind you would see that they are not being honest about their reasons for being against gay marriage, hence the absurd arguments. When someone takes actions to block my rights, which will not affect them in the least, that's hatred.

Jay/Elephant..."I have spoken out for the repeal of DADT and gay marriage". Why do you feel the need to supposedly speak out on these issues and all the while engage in such hateful rhetoric directred toward many in the gay community?? You call gay men living with HIV "diseased" and "irresponsible", you have nothing but contempt for "Stonewall" era gay men who you accuse of being paranoid. You have made hateful remarks about atheists, liberals and anyone who you seem to think does not emulate your fundamentalist view of the world. Who are you??? I am beginning to wonder if previous posters are not correct. Are you posting on here in an effort to get everyone pissed off and hating each other? Unfortunately, if that is your strategy, the only hate I am hearing is you and your extrememly myopic view of the world. Some have tried to engage you in civilized dialogue but I am afraid that you do not have the cognitive ability to participate. I can't wait to see what you call me next!!

I love how he said if his kid worked in a strip club, "I'd beat her ass." Yeah, that's very christ like. I question his gay friends for remaining friends with him KNOWING he doesn't support who they are. What kind of friend is that?
