Former vice president Dick Cheney told CNN's Candy Crowley Sunday that he was "leery" of criticism against GOP presidential candidates after the booing of a gay soldier by audience members at a debate, but said he supported repeal of "don't ask, don't tell."
"I think the decision that's been made with respect to allowing gays to serve openly in the military is a good one," Cheney, appearing on State of the Union with daughter Liz, said. "It's the right thing to do."
Of the Florida debate last month, Cheney said, "political campaigns and debates -- people boo a lot of things."
On Saturday evening, President Obama, speaking at the HRC national dinner in Washington, D.C., said of the incident, "We don't believe in the kind of smallness that says it's okay for a stage full of political leaders -- one of whom could end up being the President of the United States -- being silent when an American soldier is booed."
"You want to be Commander-in-Chief? You can start by standing up for the men and women who wear the uniform of the United States, even when it's not politically convenient," Obama said.
