The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is issuing a call to action against the Tribeca Film Festival for screening a film GLAAD is calling offensive.
Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives is about a group of transgender women who are severely beaten and seek revenge on their attackers. According to the festival's description of the film, it is a "hilariously campy homage to the exploitation films of the '70s and '80s."
In a press release, GLAAD said the film's title and marketing misrepresent transgender women "and use grotesque, exploitative depictions of violence against transgender women in ways that make light of the horrific brutality they all too often face." The organization added that because it's been classified by festival organizers as an LGBT film, "viewers unfamiliar with the lives of transgender women will likely leave this film with the impression that transgender women are ridiculous caricatures of 'real women.'"
Director Israel Luna and the Tribeca Film Festival organizers said they will not be responsible for the problematic content and offensive marketing of the film, according to GLAAD.
GLAAD is urging people to contact the Tribeca programmers through a petition on Change.org, urging them to pull the screening from the schedule.
