Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty said Wednesday that he plans to veto legislation that would grant end-of-life rights and decision-making powers to same-sex partners.

The bill passed the Minnesota senate and house, but according to Minnesota Public Radio, the Republican governor says current law is adequate for the purpose, and that supporters just want to create political controversy.

"I think the effort that's underway in this bill is simply a political game to get the concept or the wording domestic partner into state law," said Pawlenty, as reported by Minnesota Public Radio. "And I would suggest the legislature focus on addressing our budget issues rather than trying to tee up divisive social issues."

Pawlenty, who announced he would not seek reelection, is widely presumed to be interested in a 2012 presidential bid.
