Gay Group Gets United Nations Nod

After a three year application process, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission was granted consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

The U.S.-led IGLHRC resolution passed 23 in favor, 13 against, 13 abstentions, and five absences. The IGLHRC is only the tenth gay rights organization to be granted consultative status by the UN.

"Today's decision is an affirmation that the voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people have a place at the United Nations as part of a vital civil society community," said Cary Aln Johnston, IGLHRC executive director, in a statement.
