Roger Ebert's review of President Barack Obama's gay marriage stance? Don't expect any digits pointing upward.
In a Friday blog post, the longtime film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times wrote that Obama's nonsupport for marriage equality now puts him to the right of many Republican leaders -- and even Ebert's deceased mother, who was a maid of honor at a commitment ceremony in the 1970s for her two lesbian friends in Urbana, Ill.
"Now the idea of gay marriage is much before us," Ebert wrote. "[Marriage equality is] fiercely opposed, most often on religious grounds. Politicians find it prudent to play to both sides of the street by saying they 'have no opposition to civil ceremonies.' I'm disappointed in Obama for taking that approach."
Ebert lost his lower jaw to cancer in 2006 and now speaks with the aid of a computer-generated voice.
