With members of the House and Senate and three discharged service members at her side, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi signed the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" Tuesday on Capitol Hill.
"Many honors are afforded Members of Congress," Pelosi said. "I can't think of one that surpasses the honor that I will have now to sign the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'"
Pelosi hugged a tearful Barney Frank moments before signing the legislation. Rep. Patrick Murphy, who introduced the stand-alone bill repealing the gay ban in the House, spoke before Pelosi signed.
Also in attendance were three service members who were kicked out of the armed forces under "don't ask, don't tell" -- Sgt. 1st Class Stacy Vasquez, U.S. Army; Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach, U.S. Air Force; and Maj. Mike Almy, U.S. Air Force.
Pelosi concluded the event by saying, "Isn't this a joyful day? Isn't it exciting? Here we are - repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell!'"
President Barack Obama will sign the repeal Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. Eastern.
