The recent death of a woman from silicone injections in her buttocks -- at the hands of an underground transgender "doctor" -- has highlighted the dangers trans people face in changing their appearance.

Claudia Aderotimi died last month after receiving the injections in a Philadelphia hotel room; police continue to search for the transgender woman who administered them. EdgeOnTheNet looks at the numerous risks transgender people are forced to undergo in an effort to look like the gender they feel they are (Aderotimi was not transgender).

Many transgender people are forced to undergo underground procedures because often doctors aren't understanding or sympathetic to their plight -- 19% of transgender people say they've dealt with a doctor who has refused to treat them. Many transgender people also do not have health insurance and on top of that, many of the procedures they seek are not covered by private insurance or Medicaid.
