A retired university lecturer who was found stabbed to death Saturday morning is the third gay man murdered in a month in Edinburgh, says the U.K.'s Daily Record.

Police found Roger Gray's body in the hallway of his apartment. He had been stabbed repeatedly, and the killer had turned on the gas and lit a candle in the hopes of covering up the crime.

Gray, who friends say had a long-term partner, was very well liked. A spokeswoman from his former school said, "He was a long-standing, much-valued colleague who contributed greatly to the university and his students. He will be greatly missed."

His death follows the violent deaths of John Carter, 44, and another man whom police haven't publicly named, both of whom were found dead February 27.

The chief executive of Gay Men's Health says there is fear that gay men are being targeted. "People will be worried," the Daily Record quotes Bruce Fraser as saying. "Whether they are linked or not is irrelevant because the incidents create a climate of fear, given the reality is that hate crimes are a fact of life for many gay and bisexual men."
