A Panamanian diplomat who was caught cross-dressing during Carnival in Spain offered to step down from his position Monday.

Panama's consul to the Spanish Canary Islands, Italo Afu, wore a lacy dress with a banana in the bustline, according to Agence France-Presse. Afu apologized for the display to Panamanian TV station Telemetro.

"Given the distaste in Panama over my behavior, I have decided to offer the foreign ministry my resignation, and they can make the decision they see as appropriate," Afu said. "I do not want to harm anyone, much less my country."

Both the foreign minister and president of Panama, where Carnival is reportedly tamer, voiced displeasure with Afu's actions.
