Antigay Groups Added to List of Haters

Are some Christian or "pro-family" organizations that speak out against homosexuality promoting hate? Yes, says the Southern Poverty Law Center, whose website contains a map charting more than 1,000 active hate groups in the United States.

A recent issue of the SPLC's magazine, Intelligence Report, claims that gays are now the most targeted minority in America. Among the hate groups on their list are 13 organizations that have taken a public stance against homosexuality, including the Christian group Family Research Council.

According to one of the magazine's editors, Mark Potok, being antigay didn't earn anyone a spot on the list, but name-calling and spouting arguments against homosexuality that have been proven untrue did. Why? Because spreading lies about gays, lesbians, and bisexuals can lead to violence, the SPLC says.

"The FRC does engage, certainly in our view, in the propagation of known falsehoods in an effort to defame gay people," said Potok.

The FRC claims the accusations are not true.
