The New Yorkers for Marriage Equality Campaign from HRC takes center stage in a new window display at the Mark Jacobs store in the West Village in Manhattan.
Unveiled Tuesday, the display depicts a springtime wedding scene and includes text from Marc Jacobs and the Human Rights Campaign urging New Yorkers to support marriage equality. The display marks a new turn in the public awareness campaign, which until now has included video testimonials, many from high-profile New Yorkers such as Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Whoopi Goldberg, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Joan Rivers, Russell Simmons, and Barbara Bush, the daughter of former president George W. Bush.
The display at 403 Bleecker St. appears as anticipation builds for another marriage equality vote in New York this legislative season. Statewide polling shows record public support, leading advocacy groups have joined forces in the new coalition New Yorkers United for Marriage, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who enjoys high approval ratings, has said he wants to pass the bill by June. The marriage equality bill failed in the state senate in 2009. Leaders from some of the world's most prominent companies based in New York also sent an open letter to state lawmakers last week about the economic imperatives of marriage equality.
"Momentum is growing in our fight for Marriage Equality in New York," said HRC New York senior strategist Brian Ellner. "Last week New York business leaders came out in support of marriage equality, and it's great to have Marc Jacobs on the list. The fashion business is a $55 billion a year industry in New York, and we are thrilled to have their support."
Jacobs previously designed a T-shirt for HRC featuring a lesbian couple with their child and a message against the unfair tax burden faced by same-sex couples who cannot legally marry.
