Obama Declares June Pride Month, Urges Amercans to Eliminate Prejudice Everywhere

The White House proclamation reiterates the successes LGBT Americans have had this year, but still calls for an end to violence and workplace discrimination.

LGBT Americans got more support from the White House yesterday when President Obama declared the month of June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month via a proclamation that also called on people to eliminate prejudice against LGBT people. Obama said that as progress spread across the states, "as justice is delivered in the courtroom, and as more of our fellow Americans are treated with dignity and respect -- our Nation becomes not only more accepting, but more equal as well. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people."

The president reiterated that LGBT workers in many states can be fired just because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and again urged Congress to "correct this injustice by passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act." He also did a callout to other nation's to support the "universal human rights of our LGBT brothers and sisters."

President Obama and his wife Michelle will also host a White House reception celebrating LGBT Pride month on June 30.
