Mexico City saw its 1,000th same-sex marriage over the weekend, a milestone in developments since marriage equality became legal in the capital last year.

The Associated Press reports that a 37-year-old Mexican university researcher and a 29-year-old Dutch man married in the 1,000th ceremony on Sunday. An estimated 6% of people married in same-sex weddings in Mexico City are foreigners.

"The first 1,000 weddings involved 548 gay couples and 452 lesbian pairs," reports the AP. "About 85 percent of the marriages were between partners age 31 and older. Mexico's average marriage age is 28 for men and 25 for women."
