Asia Santana was sentenced Friday to a prison term of 14 to 28 years for the fatal stabbing of her boyfriend in Norristown, Penn.

The 41-year-old defendant, who is transgender and whose legal name is Tyrone Crawley, shed tears as she expressed remorse for killing Eric Nevith, 28, who she said had infected her with HIV.

"I fought with Eric all the time about him giving me this disease," she said, addressing the court. "I am sick to my soul without him. I love him with every fiber of my being."

According to The Times Herald, the couple had been arguing on August 13, 2010, when the disagreement turned violent. Santana says Nevith hit her in the face and she blacked out. Her next memory is seeing her boyfriend on the floor, bleeding from his mouth. He had been stabbed six times.

The judge also sentenced Santana to a concurrent sentence of nine to 23 months for possessing an instrument of crime during the stabbing, and ordered her to pay almost $7,000 in restitution for Nevith's funeral expenses.
