Berry: Hate Crimes May Pass Next Week

The highest ranking LGBT official in the Obama administration told The Advocate Sunday that Hate Crimes might pass next week and that President Obama was soon to announce an initiative regarding equalizing protections and benefits for LGBT employees.

John Berry, the highest ranking LGBT official in the Obama administration, announced at Washington D.C.'s Capital Pride Festival Sunday that the Obama administration hopes to secure passage of Hate Crimes this coming week and that President Obama is soon to announce an initiative pertaining to providing federal LGBT employees with benefits equivalent to those provided to their heterosexual counterparts. He also said the administration fully intends to pass an employment nondiscrimination bill, repeal "don't ask, don't tell" and overturn the Defense of Marriage Act "before the sun sets on this administration."

Before Berry, who is director of the Office of Personnel Management overseeing 1.9 million federal workers, made the announcement, he spoke to The Advocate exclusively, saying that he wanted to "download" a few thoughts about the administration's intentions vis-à-vis LGBT issues.

The backstage exchange took place in a brief window before Berry took the stage at Capital Pride and seemed to be prompted by growing discontent in the community following the Justice Department's decision to defend the Defense of Marriage Act. Berry also denied reports that any sort of "deal" had been cut by White House officials regarding LGBT legislation and when it would be accomplished.

Below are Berry's comments to The Advocate , along with his responses to a couple follow up questions.

--------

Berry: In the blog world, there's been a lot of angst and allegations and charges flying, so the good news is, I've been authorized [by the administration] today to say everything that I'm going to be saying.

One of the first things I want to be clear about is that there are a lot of charges that there's been some secret deal or backroom deal, there isn't one. There isn't one, there is no secret deal. We are working in partnership with all LGBT groups, and all groups are doing what they should be doing, which is passionately representing their unique interests.

The administration's position is very simple and straightforward and what I'll be announcing today is both the short-term and long-term focus of this administration.

People are wondering what it is. It's very clear and this is directly from the White House:

Our first hope is that we will get our federal house in order and ensure that no discrimination exists in the federal work place against any of the LGBT community. [Note: This presumably pertains to the fact that transgender workers are still not protected by the federal government's nondiscrimination policy, though gay employees are covered.]

Second, we want to make sure that we get the benefits for the LGBT community that are equal to all other benefits provided to other federal employees, and where we have the authority to move forward, the president is going to be announcing something in the very near future that is going to be a very significant announcement in that regard. Where it requires legislation, we will seek and support it.

Uncle Tome Berry has got his place on the plantation.... I hope he remembers those that are still looking for freedom. Until President Obama presents some form of LGBT agenda (we have heard nothing since election day when we turned out in droves to support him) there should be no support for him. I have requested from Team Obama the return of my donation from the 2008 campaign. We are victims of a classic BAIT and SWITCH fraud. BAIT us with promises of support on key LGBT issues. SWITCH to Bush like policies and rhetoric once elected.

We truly have no leadership on our gay rights issues at all. Especially that Joe Solomese. Only a true idiot gay would give another dime to HRC. I am not interested in ENDA. I want DOMA repealed. DOMA is a repudiation of the rights of states to make their own laws so I cannot understand why even a conservative republican would not be against it. As to waiting until 2011 for action? Get real. These people are in a controlling power position in Congress now. They will definitely lose seats in Congress in 2010. The only question is how many. And the excuse in 2011 will likely be that they do not have a large enough majority. What are we but little sheep. This little sheep is going to stay in the barn. I am done with the Democrats.

I agree with your comments and would add that the Democrats should call up the many homophobic black Democrats who voted for Obama while voting to screw the glbt community with Prop 8 and ask them for money. They might just be the only ones voting for him in 2012, because I'm beginning to consider a third party vote or even staying home. The gay & lesbian community has got to stop funding and supporting the Dems until they pass some of the Pro-LGBT legislation they promised. As for Berry and the other sell out queens working for Obama, they should resign and publish letters of resignation citing Obama's betrayal as their rationale for leaving. Its time to light the fire under the Obama and the Dems feet and wake them up to the fact that they are losing our support.

My partner and I donated money (lots), and time to the Obama campaign because we truly believed him... when asked for more money last week, we said "we no longer support your homophobic administration". I wrote to Nancy Pelosi last night (as a constituent, they actually read our e-mails), and said that we will no longer donate money or time to her or the Dems. Pelosi's district is at least 30% GLBT, and she hasn't acted on DOMA or DADT! What nerve! She is in for a surprise in a post PROP H8 San Francisco when she runs for re-election. Seriously, we should run her out of office for the lack of support she has given her constituents. She's Speaker of the House with a huge majority, and DOMA and DADT aren't "on her radar"...

Hate Crimes legislation is symbolic at best. I want Obama to address the people about the civil rights movement of the century. I want him to introduce a bill tomorrow to repeal DOMA, and another to repeal DODT. I am sick and tired of waiting. A right delayed is a right denied!

The Dallas Principles: 1. Full civil rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals must be enacted now. Delay and excuses are no longer acceptable. 2. We will not leave any part of our community behind. 3. Separate is never equal. 4. Religious beliefs are not a basis upon which to affirm or deny civil rights. 5. The establishment and guardianship of full civil rights is a non-partisan issue. 6. Individual involvement and grassroots action are paramount to success and must be encouraged. 7. Success is measured by the civil rights we all achieve, not by words, access or money raised. 8. Those who seek our support are expected to commit to these principles.

it just might be a Republican- if Dick Cheney can be ahead of Obama on gay rights, who's to say their nomanee in 2012 won't be ( and yes, Cheney kept his mouth shut for 8 years, selling his own daughter down the river for political power, don't like him anymore than the next guy)

I swear some of you are naive and wishful thinkers if you expected him to fulfill any of his promises within the first 100 days let alone this term. He still has a second term to run for, which means he's going to stay away from anything that would be a political hot potato until after the election of 2012. As Prop 8 showed the movable middle is still very easily influenced over hate politics of the other side. Yeah I want my rights just as much as the next guy, but I also want to see our country be better all around. yeah and those threatening not to vote for a democrat, good luck getting these things from the every more conservative Republicans.

Another thing. Hate crimes legislation(ENDA) started while Obama was campaigning. He had absolutely nothing to do with it. Don't let him take credit for passing it.
