Obama: Fed. Workers' to Get Partner Benefits

An Obama administration official has confirmed to The Advocate that President Barack Obama will be signing a presidential memorandum Wednesday to provide benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees.

An Obama administration official has confirmed to The Advocate that President Barack Obama will be signing a presidential memorandum Wednesday to provide benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees.

The White House press office sent out a fact sheet detailing the benefits that will be made available . The Lieberman-Baldwin Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act, a bicameral bill that was introduced last month, will still need to be passed by Congress in order for full benefits to be extended to domestic partners of federal workers.

"Our analysis has been that it will take an act of Congress for the full suite of benefits such as health benefits and retirement benefits to be provided for same-sex couples and families," said Leonard Hirsch, president of Federal Globe: Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Employees of the Federal Government. According to Hirsch, the executive branch has the authority to extend certain other benefits through departments and agencies, such as providing relocation costs for partners of federal employees.

Hirsch welcomed the announcement and added that his organization would gladly help with implementing the new policy. "We look forward to working closely with the administration to put this in place as quickly as possible," he said.

The signing is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. in the Oval Office, and the president is scheduled to make brief remarks.

Too many of these comments remind me of the Daily Kos article which proclaimed, "Obama nominates Jesus Christ for the Supreme Court. Republicans plan filibuster." Wake up, people! We have a president who cares deeply for all of us and who has to do things in stages. Would you rather have McCain - Palin in the office? This "all or nothing at all" attitude will get us nowhere FAST!

No matter what Obama decides, you'll still never be able to have your own children. Adopt, maybe. Have a kid with a woman and raise it, maybe. But you...and your partner...can never have...a real family. lol

The President claims to be a fierce advocate for us, but I think the better adjective would be "wimpy". In what I have read of reactions, I am puzzled that the community is not demanding the firing of Assistant Attorney General Tony West and Assistant Director James J. Gilligan, who if they did not write the insulting brief they at least reviewed and approved it. America doesn't need such people in key positions in the government.

SamBeGoode, POS?--lordy! You have trouble with reading comprehension and u're reactionary. Of course promiscuity and infidelity are a reality of the straight community but, when we're all honest, we know that both are more widely ACCEPTED in the gay community. I don't know many straight couples who openly sleep with other partners. 5 out of 6 of the gay male couples I know have open relationships. . It's a new standard--a new kind of relationship-it's not traditional. I don't care but to people in the South and Midwest, this is a threat to family. Also, straight men are challenged on their sexism but how many gay men of fashion are challenged on their sexism and impossible standards of female beauty? Finally, my black and Latino gay male friends don't even feel like they are part of the gay community--they feel marginalized. I'm sorry if this sounds hurtful but it's about time we have some honest discourse on the issue. This is what straight people, even the cool ones, see.

Too little, too late. After the DOMA filing by the DOJ where our relationships were equated with incest, this crumb the table is more insult than anything else. No more money to the DNC until DOMA and DADT are repealed. The LGBT ATM is closed.

I long for the day that all employees are granted the same benifits no matter what your sexual orientation is. My company does not extand FMLA to same sex couples, but will to common law married couples, just doesn't make sense.

    Comment:

The administration only did this so that they can say they are doing something so that they can host a gay fundraiser for the DNC. The benefits already exist according to the Office of Personnel Management. He has not repudiated the comments posted in the DOJ brief. At the signing, he talked about the need to overcome intolerance but his own comments further the intolerance that is out there.
