Prop. 8 PR Firm Hired in Maine

Opponents of marriage equality in Maine who seek to overturn the recently passed state law allowing same-sex marriage have hired the California public relations firm that led the Prop. 8 campaign effort, reports the Associated Press.

Opponents of marriage equality in Maine who seek to overturn the recently passed state law allowing same-sex marriage have hired the California public relations firm that led the Prop. 8 campaign effort, reports the Associated Press.

Schubert Flint Public Affairs will manage the campaign to repeal Maine's marriage equality law, which passed in May. Opponents currently are trying to collect the 55,087 signatures from registered voters needed to place a referendum on the ballot.

The Sacramento-based firm is led by president Frank Schubert, who was the chief strategist for Protect Marriage, the group that supported Prop. 8.

I agree wholeheartedly with JT: The pro-equality organizations and our community has to take some responsibility here. When someone comes out attacking you, you fight back and denounce their allegations and arguments directly head on. You win by providing the best arguments and showng their arguments are false and illogical. In CA, ignoring the "children will be harmed" arguments made by Prop 8 campaign lost us the campaign. you have to win in the Ideas department and that means being tough on the defense. The argument should have been loud, clear and quick: "so what if children learn about equality and that there are gay people and couples?" we have to start debunking these myths and winning the debate by engaging in the debate, not brushing it off as absurd. Unfortunately, if you don't address the hidden fears of people, fear will win out. And behind closed doors, alot of people have these fears, however absurd they are.

I think we need to do a parody off NOM's advertisement for the Maine Voters. Same ad, same wording except photoshop the couple to be interracial with a light skinned child... New caption to read: "Its not about being fair its about being right - Lets Not Go Back in Time"....

They want to attack gay families. Well then it is clear. We must attack str8 families. Let us show broken homes, victems of child abuse, unwanted kids put up for adoption, how about abortion....I dont think you will see any gay men or women getting any of those. Lets show children born out of wedlock. Children born into the poorest of poor situations. Let us show the sanctity of marriage. And then lets show some happy well adjusted kids of gay parents. Interviews with kids from gay parents. You cannot adopt by accident......at least gay couples want the kids they are getting. And if two loving authority figures caring for and seeing to the needs of thier children does not represent a family....what does?

I'm not as worried about the opposing sides strategy and tactics as I am about our sides. Nearly every time we have had legislation at our ballot box in Maine, and we've lost, it's been due to our side 'dropping the ball' by running a poor campaign and failing to address the criticism of the opponents. I fear for this again. The people of Maine are good people.
