Solis Outraged by Defaced Pride Posters

Labor secretary Hilda Solis circulated a letter to departmental employees late last week condemning the defacing of gay pride posters hanging in 35 department elevators.

Labor secretary Hilda Solis circulated a letter to departmental employees late last week condemning the defacing of gay pride posters hanging in 35 department elevators. Many of the posters, which have been hanging in the elevators since June 22, have been defaced or removed altogether.

"It appears, however, that some members of the Labor Department team have a different view, as it has come to my attention that most of the posters have been continually defaced or removed," Solis wrote in the letter, which was circulated via e-mail, according to The New York Times. "On several occasions, even the poster frames have been torn completely off the elevator walls. I do not believe these actions represent the majority of our employees, so I refuse to let this situation define us."

Solis wrote in the letter that the posters will remain up throughout the month and will be replaced immediately if they are damaged or removed.

Solis helped found the House of Representatives' Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Caucus when she was in Congress.

It's a testament to our LGBTQ community that it's apparent that this mentality reaches up into the highest offices of our country. When people ask WHY we're marching on Washington this October, THIS is just one reason. To those who sit comfortably in their livingrooms so detached what happens on the streets day to day, take notice now, for these are the people fighting for YOUR freedoms. Why not come and join us. We don't bite, and there's something for EVERYONE to do.

We have the same problem with our GSA posters being defaced or torn down. It seems immaturity doesn't stop after high school.

This does not suprise me. I was actually suprised that the Department of Labor does not have cameras in all of its elevators. I am very glad and existed they are actually spending money on keeping this topic visable. Letting the vandals win would be sad.
