10. DVD: Victor/Victoria
Blake Edwards directed this Paris-set musical starring his wife, Julie Andrews, as a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman. Robert Preston as her gay mentor and Lesley Ann Warren as a ditzy showgirl lend dazzling support in this 1982 classic that gets a welcome rerelease on DVD.
9. BOOK: Riding Fury Home
Chana Wilson's riveting memoir (Seal Press, $17) chronicles her difficult relationship with her suicidal mother, Gloria, who was also lesbian, and in the 1950s was sentenced to long periods in mental hospitals, undergoing electroshock treatments. Years later Gloria is able to repair her relationship with Chana, who is also coming of age as a lesbian feminist.
8. EXHIBITion: "Pushing the Illusion: The Art of Jose A. Guzman-Colon"
One of the largest collections of television drag stars, club personalities, and trans culture-based artists captured in moments of "realness" marks the first exhibition from photographer Jose A. Guzman-Colon. Opening at L.A.'s PoptART gallery April 26. For more information go to LAPopTart.com.
7. THEATER: Slow Dance in Midtown
Don Swayze (brother of Patrick) and Legally Blonde's Meredith Scott Lynn star in this searing new play with a lesbian twist from out writer Elizabeth Sarnoff, best known for her work on Alcatraz, Deadwood, and Lost. Through May 12 at L.A.'s Whitefire Theatre. For more information go here.
6. MUSIC: "Texting on the Dance Floor," Jonny McGovern
We've all been out for a night on the town only to find everyone buried in their smartphones texting, tweeting, generally avoiding live human contact. The self-proclaimed Gay Pimp feels your pain and addresses it in his latest single. Watch the video directed by William Butler, which finds comic-singer McGovern again surrounded by near-nude go-go boys, here.
5. EVENT: The GLAAD Media Awards
History will be made at the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards when The Hunger Games' Josh Hutcherson becomes the organization's youngest-ever Vanguard winner and Chaz Bono is honored as the first transgender recipient of the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. Ellen DeGeneres will open the show with a comedy routine, Jason Mraz will as close it with a musical performance, while in between expect appearances by Betty White, Fran Drescher, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. L.A.'s Westin Bonaventure Hotel April 21. For more information go here.
4. DVD: Shame
Steve McQueen's provocative psychosexual drama (now on DVD) stars full-frontal-friendly Michael Fassbender as Brandon, a magnetically repulsive 30-something sex addict who hoards porn and prowls Manhattan for tawdry hookups, getting more and more out of control as he deals with his emotionally damaged sister (Carey Mulligan) -- and as evidenced by his indulgence in a gay bar's backroom, he doesn't discriminate.
3. MUSIC: A Few Best Men
On the soundtrack to this raucous Australian comedy (already a big hit Down Under and due stateside later this year) from Priscilla director Stephan Elliott, Olivia Newton-John lends her still-gorgeous soprano to dance-updates of classic songs, including "Afternoon Delight" and "Daydream Believer." Available on iTunes April 24.
2. TV: Veep
Julia Louis-Dreyfus might finally exorcise the ghost of Elaine Benes with her brilliant performance as vapid, filthy-mouthed, anything but presidential U.S. vice president Selina Meyer, who finds that being second in command is a dead-end job. This relentlessly smart comedy avoids stereotypes and features inspired comic turns by Anna Chlumsky (two decades after My Girl) as Meyer's chief of staff and Tony Hale as her right-hand man Gary. Premieres on HBO April 22.
1. MUSIC: Love Is a Four Letter Word, Jason Mraz
The new album from the Grammy Award-winner -- who also happens to be a very vocal advocate for marriage equality -- is a celebration of all kinds of love and features his latest number 1 hit, "I Won't Give Up."
