The film portion of the South by Southwest Conferences and Festivals promises to be Divine.

I Am Divine, a documentary on John Waters's iconic drag star by Jeffrey Schwarz, is among the highlights of the film lineup, announced Thursday. Schwarz, who made last year's acclaimed HBO documentary Vito, about gay cinephile and activist Vito Russo, tells the story of how Harris Glenn Milstead of Baltimore became Waters's muse and biggest star. Those featured in the film include Waters, Tab Hunter, Michael Musto, Mink Stole, Holly Woodlawn, Ricki Lake, and Bruce Vilanch.

The SXSW filmfest, to be held March 8-16 in Austin, will offer several other films of LGBT interest. The documentary Before You Know It, from director PJ Raval, traces a year in the lives of three gay seniors. Another doc, Mr. Angel, directed by Dan Hunt, chronicles the life of trans male porn pioneer and educator Buck Angel. And Continental by Malcolm Ingram (director of Small Town Gay Bar and Bear Nation) spotlights the famous New York City gay bathhouse, which had a central role in the sexual revolution (and Bette Midler's career).

Trudy Ring is The Advocate’s senior politics editor and copy chief. She has been a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and LGBTQ+ weeklies/monthlies, trade magazines, and reference books. She is a political junkie who thinks even the wonkiest details are fascinating, and she always loves to see political candidates who are groundbreaking in some way. She enjoys writing about other topics as well, including religion (she’s interested in what people believe and why), literature, theater, and film. Trudy is a proud “old movie weirdo” and loves the Hollywood films of the 1930s and ’40s above all others. Other interests include classic rock music (Bruce Springsteen rules!) and history. Oh, and she was a Jeopardy! contestant back in 1998 and won two games. Not up there with Amy Schneider, but Trudy still takes pride in this achievement.
