Oscar Nominations: Queer Talent Overlooked Again in 2023

Oscar Nominations: Queer Talent Overlooked Again in 2023

Oscar Nominees Michelle Williams, Lady Gaga, Michelle Yeoh, and Cate Blanchett

And the nominees are...

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning. While many of the films celebrated focused on LGBTQ+ characters, most of the projects lacked queer leading actors or creatives.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be televised on ABC. And while the Oscars have acknowledged women filmmakers in recent years, no women were nominated for best director.

Queer-inclusive Everything Everywhere All at Once raked in the most nominations with 11 total, including for Stephanie Hsu for Best Supporting Actress. Hsu plays Michelle Yeoh's queer daughter in the film.

Tár, a film about a predatory lesbian conductor and composer, received six nominations: Best Picture, Best Director (Todd Field), Best Actress (Cate Blanchett), Best Original Screenplay (Todd Field), Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing. Another controversial film, The Whale, earned three including for Brendan Fraser's performance of a gay man spiraling out over his grief after the death of his partner. Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery earned a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Daniel Craig plays queer detective Benoit Blanc in the film.
