What does it look like to grow up black and gay in America?
Playwrights Horizons has released new production photos for the New York premiere of Bootycandy, out playwright Robert O'Hara's satirical comedy about a young gay black man's journey of sexual self-discovery.
Directed by O'Hara, Bootycandy began performances August 22 and will officially open September 10 for a limited engagement through October 12 at off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons Mainstage Theater.
Out actor Phillip James Brannon (The City of Conversation)stars as Sutter, who embarks "on an outrageous odyssey through his childhood home, his church, dive bars, motel rooms and even nursing homes," according to press notes about the production. "A kaleidoscope of sketches that interconnect to portray growing up gay and black, Robert O'Hara's subversive, uproarious satire crashes headlong into the murky terrain of pain and pleasure and... Bootycandy."
The cast also includes Jessica Frances Dukes, Jesse Pennington, Benja Kay Thomas, and Lance Coadie Williams.
Bootycandy, which is recommended for mature audiences only, had its world premiere in June 2011 at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, D.C.
