Some are saying "it's the end of the era" now that San Francisco's Tea Room Theatre is closing its doors for good this weekend.
The Tea Room, which shows pornographic movies and features live performances, opened in the early 1980s. A fixture in the rough-and-tumble Tenderloin district, the Tea Room has fallen victim to hookup apps like Grindr and Scruff.
Tea Room employee Steve Angeles told the Bay Area Reporter the theater "doesn't make any money" and lamented the high rent; San Francisco rents are typically some of the highest in the nation.
The Tea Room features a 50-seat theater, a small stage for dancers and performances, private rooms for watching porn, and a locker room. Admission to the Tea Room is only $15; $10 on Tuesdays.
San Francisco has one remaining gay porn palace -- the 48-year-old Nob Hill Theatre. Co-owner Larry Hoover told the Reporter, "We're hanging in there."
