Jennifer Palmieri, who was communications director for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign told Rachel Maddow the Electoral College needs to be briefed on Russian efforts to elect Donald Trump, especially ahead of electors' vote December 19.

Palmieri said the Clinton campaign previously chose to stay out of efforts by the public to convince the Electoral College to choose the former secretary of State over Trump, who is entangled in numerous business conflicts that could potentially jeopardize the nation.

The news that broke Friday that Russia worked specifically to elect Trump -- rather than simply meddling with the election, as previously thought -- changed circumstances, and the campaign now believes the Electoral College should receive CIA briefings on the Russian hack.

Though it's unlikely that the electors would dump Trump and vote in Clinton, Palmieri points out one of the reasons the Founding Fathers created the Electoral College was to prevent the election of a president who is under control of a foreign government. For his part, Trump dismisses CIA assertions that the Russians aided him but, oddly, nominated a close friend of Russian president Vladimir Putin -- Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson -- as secretary of State.
