Internship Positions

LPI Media offers qualified, college-level students the opportunity to participate in quarterly, uncompensated internships available in our offices in Los Angeles and New York City. In general, most internships last for 3 months, at 10-16 hours per week. See basic internship descriptions and locations below. Art Department Intern, Out Magazine, New York

Working directly with Out magazine's art staff, the intern will assist the art and design department with daily tasks including scanning, organizing art and assisting with design. Sitting in on staff meetings, Interns will see the full production cycle and receive hands-on experience on this stylish, monthly title. Interns will need Photoshop, Quark and InDesign skills.

Book Publishing Marketing & Publicity Intern, New York

Interns will have the opportunity to work with the Marketing & Publicity Manager who is responsible for strategizing and directing Alyson Books' marketing and publicity initiatives. The ideal intern candidate will have strong a strong interest in book marketing, publicity, branding and strategy. Marketing and research experience and excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Editorial experience (print) is a plus. The intern will assist with preparing seasonal marketing materials, updating media lists, processing review mailings, writing publicity and marketing materials, etc.

Book Publishing Production & Design, New York

Alyson Books welcomes an intern who is interested in learning all the processes of how a book gets designed, edited and finalized for sale. The chosen intern will be proficient in Quark, Microsoft Word, some Excel and have Mac proficiency. Also, we'll be asking for some proofreading capacity, good grammar skills, quick reading and scanning abilities, the ability to set up and maintain files (disk and paper) and good text management skills.

Circulation Intern, New York

The intern will assist the Circulation Director on several different projects and should have knowledge of Excel, Office programs, and have strong organizational skills. The Circulation department manages all of the new subscriber acquisition programs, including Direct Mail, Internet and Telemarketing efforts. Learn the business side of publishing and take on an important role in our upcoming campaigns.

Digital Media Intern, New York, Los Angeles

The Digital Media Department at LPI Media is looking for an intern(s) to assist in the production of online newsletters, make site modifications and work on special projects as needed. Sites include OUT.com and Advocate.com. Candidates should be skilled in Photoshop and basic HTML. Any Flash or video experience is helpful.

Editorial

Editorial internships are offered in Los Angeles and New York for The Advocate, Out and The Out Traveler magazines. Interns will assist with various support projects such as editorial gathering, research, proofing, web site production and other related editorial and administrative tasks. Some writing and editing assignments may be possible, depending upon qualifications, but cannot be guaranteed. Interns are invited to take a place at daily editorial planning meetings and will work along with editors, art/photo department and other staff as issues are created according to the magazine's production cycle.

Preferred editorial intern candidates will have a related field of study and a career interest in journalism or publishing. Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills are required.

Fashion

Fashion internships are offered with Out magazine editorial staff in New York. Interns will assist the Fashion Director and Market Editor with organizing fashion features, gathering clothing, prepping photo shoots and supporting the fashion department with the administrative effort behind producing the fashion section of each issue.

Preferred candidates will have a related field of study and a career interest in fashion, photo editing, or other similar industry. Must be able to handle multiple projects and provide efficient and effective administrative support. Excellent personal communication skills are a must. 

Photo Department Intern, Out magazine, New York

Out magazine is seeking photo interns with a passion for contemporary culture contributing to the gay urban lifestyle. This is an excellent opportunity to industrious and enthusiastic people who have a love for photography, the magazine world, and gay culture. Interns should have a strong work ethic, be able to work independently, have a keen eye for detail, and be very well organized. Intern responsibilities include photo research, maintaining the photo archives, assisting on photo shoots, logging-in and returning art, being a contributing member during creative meetings, and possibly undertake some photography assignments if skills permit. General administrative duties will also be expected.

Photo Intern, The Out Traveler magazine, New York

The Out Traveler magazine is seeking photo interns. This is an excellent opportunity to industrious and enthusiastic people who have a love for travel photography, the magazine world, and gay culture. Interns should have a strong work ethic, have a keen eye for detail, and be very well organized. Working closely with the Photo Editor, the Intern responsibilities include photo research, assisting with photo production, scanning and resizing files and a good knowledge of analog and digital photography. General administrative duties will also be expected.

All interns must have knowledge of Photoshop, Microsoft Excel and Word programs, with a basic understanding of Mac OS. Good typing skills and internet familiarity is a plus. Most importantly, all interns should be comfortable and effective communicating over the phone, in person, and via e-mail. Experience researching images with stock agencies a plus. Photography majors preferred.

Promotions Intern, New York

The promotions intern will work with the New York staff of The Advocate, Out and The Out Traveler magazines on added value programs and promotions. Intern will assist with various promotions projects while providing some administrative support to the department. Some writing and editing assignments may be possible, depending upon qualifications. Intern will participate in promotions planning meetings and learn about the operational and creative functions of publishing a magazine.

Qualifications: A related field of study and a career interest in promotions or promotions with excellent oral and written communication skills.

Graphic Design, Marketing Intern, New York

PlanetOut Inc, parent company of The Advocate, Out, The Out Traveler, Gay.com and Planetout.com is looking for an intern with great design skills and a desire to learn more about online and offline media. The ideal intern will have experience working with most Adobe Creative Suite 3 programs, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Basic knowledge of PowerPoint, Excel and Word is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in HTML, Flash and Dreamweaver. This position will provide an opportunity to develop and/or expand the internĚs design portfolio to include sales and marketing collateral, advertorials and microsites, house ads and more. The Marketing Intern will work directly with Design Director in Marketing, Media Sales and will also interface directly with other members of the marketing and sales teams
