Mike Lavers wrote a story ("Gay Immigrants Put the I Before the G," March 11, 2008) suggesting that LGBT organizations are not aware of the issues presented by the Bush administration's immigration crackdown. Immigration Equality has spent the past two years sounding the alarm about the potential harm that misguided immigration restrictions pose for LGBT and HIV-positive people, especially the dangers "no match" letters create for transgender immigrants. Mr. Lavers interviewed me in preparation for this story, but never mentioned he was writing about "no match" letters -- his questions focused entirely on the labor movement's relationship to LGBT immigration rights. If he had asked me about the issue, I would have been happy to describe the work that Immigration Equality (for which I am executive director), National Center for Transgender Equality, and ACLU, among others, have been doing to protect immigrants' rights.
