Mixed Messages

When I saw the cover of this month's Advocate "...did we send him to his death?" I was immediately outraged. The blood of Larry King lies on the hands of the boy who killed him and the society who taught him that violence is a valid response. Our mistake was not to tell this boy it was OK to be himself, it was to tell him to expect tolerance. "Tolerance" connotes something bothersome and abnormal. As GLBT Americans we must stop asking for "tolerance" and start demanding acceptance. Only then will such senseless violence end.
