Let me first say
that I always enjoy reading The Advocate, and the most
recent issue was no exception. However, I have a problem
with your use of the word "schizophrenia" to describe
his views of same-sex marriage. Schizophrenia is an
often disabling, no-fault brain disorder. It is a
serious illness, not to be compared in any way to the
willfull double-speak of a politician. Now there may
be some who would argue that there is something
seriously wrong with the governor's thought processes.
But please accept my request, on behalf of those who live
with or love people with serious mental illnesses, to
refrain from placing further stigma on schizophrenia
by associating it with right-wing politicians. To be
fair, the word "schizophrenic" is often used incorrectly
(and lightly) by many journalists in the mainstream
media. Maybe The Advoacte can lead the way by showing
sensitivity and picking up a thesaurus.
