In a story on Subway spokesman Jared Fogle's sentencing for sex charges against minors, the New York Post featured the following cover headline for its Thursday edition: "Subway Jared underage sex shock: Enjoy a foot long in jail."
The Post, owned by Fox media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, is known for its salacious headlines, but even President Obama has warned the media about making jokes involving prison rape. Over 216,000 are sexually abused in American prisons every year.
Many tweets blased the Post's rape endorsement:
\u201c#JaredFogle belongs under the jail but prison rape jokes are unfunny, banal and perpetuate the #rapeculture that grow predators like him.\u201d— Sofia Quintero (@Sofia Quintero) 1440088658
