The Tony-Award winner went on The View to share how marrying his long-time partner was about affirming their family to their young children.

As Neil Patrick Harris has begun opening up about the details of his wedding to David Burtka, it's become clear the ceremony was focused on the family.

This Wednesday, Harris went on The View to describe the celebration, held privately in Italy earlier this month, saying he and Burtka made the decision to wed so that their 3-year-old twins could better understand their family.

"We were not [getting married] to elicit any kind of reaction from anyone. We just have been together over 10 years," he told cohosts Rosie O'Donnell and Whoopi Goldberg. "I think when our kids got to the age where they were having reasonable conversations -- when they're asking lots of 'why' questions -- then it seemed like to be able to have a real, clear-cut explanation of who their daddy is. I think it's great [to say], 'He's my husband.'"

Of the couple's vows, Harris explained, "I just wanted to be able to say nice things about David, to David, in front of the people that matter the most to us. It was less about a proclamation and more about a declaration that I was able to share in front of our kids, and that he could do back to me."

O'Donnell, whose own erstwhile same-sex marriage and parental journey has been shared by the media for years, noted the significance of this moment.

"Who'd have thought when we were kids that we'd be on a TV show, gay people, talking about our spouses and children?"
