Several prominent, virulently antigay speakers gathered in front of the Washington, D.C., office of the Human Rights Campaign Tuesday morning to protest June being proclaimed LGBT Pride Month.
Peter LaBarbera, the founder and president of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, who has earned the nickname "Porno Pete" among LGBT activist circles for his propensity to focus on the graphic details of anal sex, opened the news conference by trying to answer the question "What's wrong with gay pride?"
Linda Harvey, the founder of the antigay Mission America organization and radio show, and Diane Gramley, the president of the antigay American Family Association. were also in attendance, according to a pre-event press release obtained by Jeremy Hooper at Good as You.
Matt Barber, the vice president of the antigay "civil rights" group and public policy organization Liberty Counsel, alleged that HRC was largely responsible for the recent IRS scandal, where the government agency admitted it targeted conservative political groups for heightened scrutiny when considering applications for nonprofit organizations. Barber also contended that HRC illegally obtained private records from the National Organization for Marriage in an effort to smear the nation's most vocal organizational opponent of marriage equality.
"President Obama and his IRS are evidently aiding and abetting this radical organization," Barber said in a statement. "Because sexual anarchist groups like the HRC cannot win the debate on the merits, they must resort to underhanded and, as it now appears, outright illegal tactics in order to gain momentum for their extremist agenda."
In the pre-event statement, LaBarbera promised he and his ideological allies would gather "in front of the world's most powerful homosexual lobby group, Human Rights Campaign, in Washington, D.C., during so-called 'Gay Pride Month' (June) to proclaim the politically incorrect truth: that proud homosexuality is against God; against Nature; very unhealthy; and a serious threat to children and religious freedom. Thankfully, it is also changeable -- as proved by the existence of countless thousands of happy former 'gay' men and ex-lesbians."
Every major medical and psychological organization in the nation disputes LaBarbera's claim that sexual orientation is changeable, with the American Psychological Association concluding that efforts to pray away the gay are not only ineffective, but harmful to a person's self esteem and overall well-being.
HRC, for its part, welcomed the antigay demonstrators, even rolling out a banner that read "Welcome, Peter" beside the organization's now-ubiquitous red equal sign demonstrating support for marriage equality.
