Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has been taking fire lately for derogatory comments he made about Mexicans, but comedian George Lopez kicked it up a notch with his own offensive comments directed at Trump.
At his Saturday night show in Phoenix, Ariz., Lopez led the audience in a call-and-response homophobic chant, in response to Trump's charge in his announcement speech that Mexicans are "bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists, and some, I assume, are good people."
First, Lopez told his audience that "This country is better with Latinos in it."
After directing the crowd as to what to say, the comedian shouted "Donald Trump," to which the audience enthusiastically replied, "Fuck that puto!" The chant was repeated several times.
"Puto" is a derogatory term in Spanish for male prostitute that has different meanings depending on its usage, but is generally used as an insult, and can mean "faggot."
Lopez used the offensive word on stage, as seen in a TMZ video posted on YouTube, and is no stranger to controversial comments, and has evoked this particular slur in his politically based comedy in the past.
In 2012, Jimmy LaSalvia, the co-founder and executive of a conservative LGBT group called GOProud, spoke out against Lopez and his use of the word "puto," in a bit about Mitt Romney, demanding an apology.
David Badash at New Civil Rights Movement notes that Lopez has also used the loaded word in routines criticizing anti-immigrant Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, President George Bush, and a host of other Republicans who have made racially charged statements or sweeping generalizations about Latinos.
Video from Lopez's performance was uploaded to YouTube by Bridget Figueroa. Watch it below:
