Australian Nick Jensen angered many when he penned an op-ed for the Canberra CityNews where he announced he and his wife, Sarah, would divorce if Australia legalizes same-sex marriage (the country will likely vote on the matter by the end of the year).
In response to the Jensen's declaration, another Australian, Jesse Mount, launched a Facebook group to celebrate the couple's divorce. The group plans to celebrate the Jensens' dissolution when Australia finally offers marriage equality. As of Wednesday, over 183,000 have RSVP'd to the "celebration." The page reads:
I invite everyone who supports marriage equality to come celebrate the DIVORCE of Nick & Sarah Jensen!
They have decided that being married together in a country where it's legal for a man and a man to marry, or a woman and a woman, is just too horrible. They'd much rather be divorced and I think we should all support and celebrate in their decision when the date finally does come.
We sure hope there won't be any backing out on their behalf as hundreds upon hundreds of gays and gay rights supporters come to rejoice in the parting ways of these narrow minded citizens which so many of us are ashamed to call Canberrans.
Date and location to be announced, but hopefully in the not too distant future. (Sep 1st just a placeholder for now, but who knows!)
The Facebook group has been flooded by same-sex couples sharing photos and stories as well as straight allies voicing their support for marriage equality, according to The Huffington Post.
