The gay men who are grumbling about a female poll question need to STFU and realize they are NOT the center of the universe - or even of the gay community. Second, the people who always grouse when the Advocate asks an "unimportant" question need to lighten up. I'm all about focusing on civil rights and human rights issues of the gay community (and other communities) worldwide - but a quick 10 second poll doesn't always have to be about weighty issues. In fact, sometimes I read the Advocate poll during breaks from my "important" volunteer work that affects real lives, peer counseling gay youth on a national hotline. It is possible to mix light-hearted frivolity with serious work! It's okay to have poll questions about sex, and doesn't mean that we are exclusively focused on sex.

I believe Kate's own confidence and ability to portray such an emotionally troubled character as Shane has captivated her audiences and led many woman to find in themselves the ability to be just as confident about their own sexuality. The fact that Kate is true to her self and seems to truly appreciate the female form is one reason she is a sex symbol. Also, her ability to show just how fucked up as well as liberating sex can be let's other women know that sex is not this taboo thing that we can't discuss and must be kept to ourselves. Kate, through her characters, shows us how to cope with the trials and tribulations that sex can cause and still be human at the end of the day. She let's us know that any woman, no matter her appearance, insecurities, or past can be attractive and feel sexy.

"Who cares?" Coming from a gay man, that's pretty damn offensive. Hello! We - the lesbian readers of the Advocate - do exist. I don't see too many gay men asking, "Who cares?" when photos of bare-chested men (with barely any women interspersed) decorate the pages of the Advocate's summer sex edition. Hopefully none of these. Why must women continue to be viewed as "sex symbols"? Speaking as a man, I would find this very demeaning. One of the primary reasons that morals among teenagers have sunk to an all time low, in the encouragment of females (thru the media) to wear little clothing. Then we wonder why the incidents of teenage rape, date rape, etc, continue to rise. Old female stars like Sophia Loreen. Lauren Bacall, and Grace Kelly were just naturally beautiful, even when fully clothed. The emphasis on SEX and the profiteering of it in America is apalling. I am not a prude. However, I think women sould be judged individually not collectively. A relatively plain woman, like actress Audrey Hepburn, can come over as being sexy. We often forget that beauty is, and always should, be in the eye of the individual beholder!!
