Federal Government does not offer domestic partner benefits, even though living in CT I have a state sanctioned civil union. The compassionate conservative is an oxymoron and want to maintain us as second class citizens not worthy of any rights.

Domestic-partner insurance is available, but the "hitch" is that the premiums are equal to what two unattached individuals would pay, not the lower rate that a married couple would pay.

I work in a corporate Hallmark store, and Hallmark offers domestic partner benefits to employees working at their corporate headquarters. They do not offer these same benefits to corporate store employees for some very odd reason.

Lori Dickinson
We have two children together who are covered under my partner's family insurance plan but I can not be added to the coverage, which would result in NO additional cost to her employer, because they do not recognize our relationship of 16 years as a legal marriage.

Angie Averitte
My company claims to offers domestic partner insurance. When I attempted to add my partner I was told that I had to pay the full premium which is five times greater than I pay for myself. Is that legal?

Wisconsin was one of the first states to pass employment protections for the LGBT community yet the University of Wisconsin remains without domestic partner benefits, I believe either the last or nearly the last in the Big 10 to do so. So much for progress.

Even the neighborhood food coops give domestic partnership healthcare benefits to cashiers and baggers in my area. I've had to search for jobs and changed careers several times in the last few years and never even came across a local employer who DIDN"T offer the benefits--except in government jobs oddly enough.

Isn't it about time you posted a new poll???

I work for the largest homeowners' insurer in the US, State Farm. Not only does State Farm not offer domestic partner benefits, the company pays significantly more of health coverages costs for married employees than for single employees. Paid time off policies are also biased in favor of employees with family structures that fit a 1950s definition of "family." It's one of the few Fortune 50 companies that still does not offer an equitable compensation/benefits package.

Byron
It does, but the tax situation is adverse. The employee pays taxes on "imputed income" for the DP. The monthly deduction for a married couple is $360, for a gay couple $580. Thanks, Bill Clinton!

Rob
Yes, my company has offered same-sex domestic partner benefits for years now but I have to pay taxes on these beenfits as the cost is added to my salary, taxed, then taken out. So Uncle Sam is making money off those of us in th egay community who take advantage of this "benefit."

Riri
we get it, but the cost ridicilous! We pay up to 4x the cost as a non-same sex couple. However, we are very grateful to have this benefit.

Evan
RBS /The Royal Bank of Scotland or Citizens Bank/Charter One (USA) does offer domestic partners insurance to their employees. I am a grateful employee who takes advantage of this wonderful benefit. The company also is very clear that same sex discrimination will not be tolerated.

They are a major university and are supposed to be "diverse". If they really wanted to be diverse, they'd offer or help find a way to offer. Their webpage on "domestic Partner benefits has been the same since 2003

Mike Andrews
The catch here is that you must pay taxes on any amount the company pays for the insurance including and medical bills paid by the insurance for the domestic partner. Until the Federal government approves of Gay Marraige, we will be forced to continue to pay these taxes. It voids the entire notion of health benefits for domestic partners.

Keith Andrews
It has probably saved my partner's life.

Beginning in 2008, the Kroger Company which is based in Cincinnati, Ohio will be offering domestic partner insurance. This is a huge step for a company that is based in Cincinnati. I feel that it was a decision made in order to keep a competitive edge in the changing face of business. I find it quite disturbing however that there are special domestic partner tax forms which have to be filed. So whether or not we are legally able to be married the government is still getting their piece of the pie.

I work in Portland, OR, but my employer is based out of Nashville. I was pretty shocked when the change came (about 2 years ago).

My company provides "household benefits" which cover a domestic partner - or anyone living with an employee - but at a different coverage level and cost. Domestic partners do not get equal coverage that married couples receive.

I work for the City of LA, LAPD. I am registered as a domestic partner with the City and my partner has full access to my health benifits.

Sumner Peirce
I am glad that Starwood offers it because my partner sold his business early in the year and by having him on my insurance he did not suffer any break in coverage. He is on my health, dental, and eye coverage.

d in nyc
I was getting my really affordable health insurance through my partner's work. unfortunately it turns out it costs more to be on her insurance than to get my own because of the taxes we owed at the end of the year- federal and state taxed at her tax bracket (aprox 25%!) that 169/ month now was 350/ month. like cindy said- we are still screwed.

I have been employed with my company for 33 years. I have seen non-GLBT employees receive this benefit while I have never had the opportunity. I feel I am treated unfairly because of a society forced prejudice and I think it's time to stop the discrimination. All companies should do what they need to do to make all employees have the SAME fair and just benefits. They can't make up the past 33 years but my career isn't over and I would truly appreciate having the availability of the SAME benefits as my non-GLBT peers. As it is stated... Equal rights - No more - No less.

Schaeffler Group, USA SUCKS!!

Reno, NV
My company doesn't offer anything that they aren't required to by law.

Robert Castaldo
I work for a major retailer, Linens N Things to be exact, and there are many gay & lesbian employees employed nationwide. My store employs 4 out of 5 managers that are either gay or lesbian. When I questioned this, the reply was that the matter was addressed and nothing came of it. Worse yet, my previous employer, Orkin Pest Control, also did not provide DP benefits and inasmuch as my partner was employed at Carmax, who DOES offer DP benefits, I had no need to sign up for myself at Orkin. Now comes the good part. When my partner changed jobs, I had to obtain benefits through my employer. When I explained the circumstances, our HR rep said "We don't recognize those relationships." I explained that I wanted benefits for myself, not my partner as he was able to sign up with his new employer. Not a word was said in reply.

I work for a major bank that does offer domestic partner benefits, but they're taxed as income. In addition, although they have a non-discrimination policy that includes sexual orientation (as well as scoring 100 on the HRC list) it is NOT a safe place for the GLBT community. The main office is in N. Carolina, which is a state where you can still be fired just for being gay or lesbian and there have been instances (that everyone in the bank is aware of) when an employee comes out, or is out, they eventually get "displaced" - coincidence? I think not....

David
I work for the federal government, so I anticipate it will be a very long time before DP benefits will be offered for me.

Anonymous
yes , for over 20 years

While my comapny is making progress, we recently moved to an HRC score of 80, we seem to be waiting until the lat possible chance to add benefits. We are the #1 insurer of cars to the GLBT population, and yet we do not offer DPB's. This is a frustrating and challenging position to be in. Being able to earn a score of 80 without DPB's is not a great motivator for a company to truly walk the talk. DPB's and an inclusive non-discrimination clause are the two most important items. You shouldn't be awarded the "green" light without either one of these hallmarks of inclusion.

Because of a new hate based state law in Michigan, we can't get "domestic partner" benefits anymore. So the state Universities changed the name to "other qualified adult".

Though headquartered in the heart of red-state Texas and in even more conservative Collin county, EDS Corp recognizes that a global employer of 140,000 cannot discriminate and still attract the best resources.

Three and a half years ago, I quit my full-time job to become a self-employed artist, and was without health insurance for about two years until my partner's company began offering domestic partner benefits. Ironically, he works for a health insurance company! We are thankful that the company decided to treat all of its employees fairly.

As my partner and I get older, this becomes more of an issue for us. It could be time to look for a new employer.

Yes but it is not the same as married people. Equally offensive is that HRC has given them a score of 100, several years in a row. This is not equality and even when I pointed it out to HRC, they did nothing. We will no longer support HRC.

My company does offer benefits, however I am taxed on those benefits at their full cost value. It makes it very expensive to participate.

The problem it though is that you have to pay extra money (like $250- 500) each month to offset the taxes. It sucks. This would not be an issue if we could get married legally in America.

I work for the federal government and the Defense of Marriage Act puts a complete kibosh on same-sex / domestic - partner insurance. I hope that Hillary, Obama, John or whoever is elected can start to change that with a (hopefully) Democratic congress. But I'm not holding my breath.

My company does offer domestic-partner insurance, which is a bit of a surprise being a US subsidiary of a huge, historically conservative Germany corporation. I believe in True Equality. The Country is founded on God's Word. I find it hard to believe that we are still fighting amongst ourselves in regards to equal treatment regardless of sex, color, gender, creed, religious beliefs, and national origin. When are we gonna wake up? Sex is not a public issue nor should it be performed in public. We need to wake up and Truly Educate Ourselves and Children of the True Definition of Love. God's Love. Love Thy Neighbor as Thy Love Thy self. Love, Honor and Respect everyone. Is the world waiting on the return of the Messiah before realizing that we were wrong to discriminate due to our own personal Uncomfort level, so we've looked at others in disgust as if we ourselves are without sin like Jesus?

Paul Eschelbach
I am a teacher. My union [the NJEA/LBSEA] fought for same-sex coverage in our contract for 12 years. As the domestic partnership bill was passing in New Jersey, my Board of Education granted the request. Now New Jersey has a civil union law, and my husband has medical, dental and prescription insurance. This has immensely augmented out quality of life and given us a sense of fuller equality

Domestic Partner benefits. No. But then, I would be fired if my employer knew I was gay. I'm in the military. I can die for my country. I just can't love another man or be honest about who I am.

My partner is disabled and on social security disability and thus qualifies for Medicare. However, even if my company decided to add domestic-partner insurance, I would most likely NOT add her name out of fear that I would then be targeted for dismissal. Sounds paranoid? It happened to a friend.

I have repeatedly asked the question and the answer is always no. I work for Fiserv which is now a Fortune 500 company. When I first came to work for the company in 2003 it included sexual orientation in it's non-discrimatory policy. This was removed in 2006. The company is less gay friendly than previously and has no indication of offering domestic-partner insurance benefits.

Here's the catch...My check shows "imputed domestic partner income." The contribution my company puts in for my partner is added to my gross as taxable income. Then after I pay tax on it it's taken out as a deduction. Also, the portion I pay out of my "actual earnings" is taxed. Yet the portion I pay that covers me is pre-taxable earnings. Were my partner and I allowed to marry this extra taxable "INCOME" would not be there. I don't even care if it was called marriage. Call it contract 123 but give me the same legal rights to take care of who I choose to commit my life to.P.S. wish me luck figuring out my taxes.

Walgreens is an excellent company to work for. Just set goals and have determination and they will help you to the top. The sky is the limit! It is nice working for a company that appreciates the individual instead of the mindless employee. Better than Target by far! Oh, and the benefits are good too.

Actually it's my union which does...of course we have to pay in advance the federal tax, but the good news is since it's california there is no state tax on this "non wage income". But then to qualify to cover dp for insurance in retirement, you have to be a notized DP for 2 yrs prior...gee I wonder if you're hetero, if you have to have been married for 2 yrs before retirement to have your hetero married over covered? Doubt it.

That is one of the things that attracted me to work for Sovereign Bank. They offer domestic partnership benefits for heterosexual couples and homosexual couples.

I worked for Hunter Douglas in Broomfield, CO for almost nine years and asked about partner benefits. They did not offer them, nor did they have plans to do so. After giving 110% in my job for all those years - which was only possible because my partner David took care of our home life - I was tired of them not acknowledging the contribution David made for their success. I left the company and now work for a non-profit that is much more accepting of both David and me.

Yes - I work for a progressive firm that employs a lot of younger people. We can add partners or spouses to our insurance, but we have to pay their full premiums - the company doesn't cover them but guarantees they can be added. However, the benefits are exactly the same regardless of whether you are in a same-sex or different-sex relationship.

Russ Anderson
I love my job, my boss is the best I've ever had, my salary is great, but my company cannot offer domestic partner insurance because their insurance carrier doesn't offer plans to small companies. It's a big problem for me, and I've often considered jumping ship, but I find it hard to walk away from all the good things. Bottom line -- no matter how happy I am in my job, if they can't recognize and cover my partner of 17 years, I will always be open to a job offer from another company that does.

William S Hydrick
Tulane officially offers it but their portion is considered taxable income. Further, the requirements are, by all accounts, a bureaucratic nightmare. Still, it was a major accomplishment to get it in the handbook.

Robin Hurni
I've worked in healthcare for 20 years..since 1998 every hospital big and small has offered DPB my current employer ..a large hospital..did not...I lobbied for a year with my HR deptartment..and with the help of Equality Maryland..they offered it this year...The over-riding sediment was very positive..those in power had all wanted to do the right thing.they just needed a little push..I am so happy that my partner will now have health benefits. The hospital is in a conservative, republican area..so it was a stong stance for them...

Barnes and Noble Booksellers! I have many gay, lesbian, and bisexual coworkers and am blessed to be comfortably out in my workplace!

Craig King
Retired now, but they didn't then, nor do they now. Technically they are breaking a city ordinance which forbids discrimination based on sexual orientation, but they get around it by not offering it to any domestic partners. The catch-22: Gays can't get married in this state. It still sucks.

I'm retired and my ex-employer just offered health insurance, dental insurance, and vision insurance this past summer. It will save us a lot of money even after I pay taxes on my ex-employer's contribution. My partner and I had to present a lot of documentation to prove that we were financially interdependent. All in all, the extra hassle was worth it.

Perhaps the better question would be, "do you know of any companies that offer domestic partner insurance?' We are still hated and are still treated like second class citizens. I don't think I will live long enough to see acceptance in my life time. (I am 63) Notice that I use the word "acceptence" and not "tolerance". There is and always been a distinct difference. People who "tolerate" you won't kill you, beat you up, or possibly not use the "F" word. However, to just be tolerated is still being viewed as somewhat innately inferior!!

We don't discriminate in hiring but have a long ways to go in the insurance area. Unmarried str8 couples have a difficult time getting each other covered here too. In fact I don't think they can unless both work for our company. Luckly for them they can get the kids covered. Yes, we are still digging out of the stone age.

Yes, but because federal law does not recognize same-sex relationships, domestic partner benefits are provided on an after-tax basis, while legally married heteros are permitted to deduct these benefits pre-tax (making for yet another heterosexual tax windfall.)

Insurance companies? You've got to be kidding! Most of them are ultra right wing, white Republican, heartless, money driven institutions. They could care less about the needs of a bunch of queers. They are right up there with the drug companies...expect no help or assistance.

Disgruntled retiree
My answer is yes, well-actually kinda sort of. Here's the story... I recently retired from a large multi-national corporation based in the mid-west. I was told I could provide health insurance for my domestic partner after I retired. Sily me, I thought I'd pay the same price for my partner as my colleagues paid for their spouses. But , NO. I would have had to pay 5 times as much for my domestic partner after my retirement! The reason?? Without a federal recognition of our legal relationship the company would have had to deduct taxes on any contributions to my partner's healthcare, which they had no mechanism to do, So after being lulled into a false sense of equality, it was back to the queer ghetto for me. !
