no I have not but a friends dog did it really makes me wonder where she got it??

So, lucky me, I had a MRSA infection which I thought was just an ingrown hair, at first. It quickly developed into a hellacious abscess that I had to have lanced. My doc said that the staph bacterium lives on one's skin and when I cut myself shaving, it got into the wound and had a party. It was very painful and extremely nasty, to say the least, and I still have a scar.

Thankfully, no.

and let me add that I'm in the healthcare field and see patients with it rather often. Hopefully, I won't ever get it. I'll just take the appropriate precautions and rely on the big guy...

Where do you come up with these total crap questions?

MRSA has been around for DECADES in nursing homes and hospitals. There is nothing "new" about this disease. This isn't the "new AIDS" as some are saying. Too much of our media work on fear and fear makes the ratings and ratings make the wallet big and that is the only reason we are suddenly hearing all about MRSA.

What is MRSA?

I was detected with nasal colonization when hospitalized for open heart surgery. I was never infected with staph infection myself.
Rick
No. I have never had this infection.

This question must be in reference to an article in the Advocate, like many others. I don't read much of the A because it's so MSM (mainstream media) for gay folk.
What's MRSA? More Reason to Stay Alone? But seriously WTF is it?
Jason
Have not had a MRSA infection. I even work in a hospital. It is all about washing your hands, or a hand sanitizer. But hand washing is the key!

I thought I did for a while but turns out that the extreme winter weather mixed with the dry heat was just killing my skin in new and interesting ways.

Definition from Wikipepedia Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterium responsible for difficult-to-treat infections in humans. Also referred to as multiply-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ORSA). The organism is often sub-categorized as Community-Associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) or Hospital-Associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) depending upon the circumstances of acquiring disease, based on current data that these are distinct strains of the bacterial species.[1]

No, but in Edmonton, where I live, it's not even an issue. I'll mention MRSA and people will have no idea what I'm talking about.

Not sure, what the hell is it?? I did get the clap from a fat hawaiian lady once.

Can we have another question, PLEASE? And can you change the questions far more often, PLEASE??? And can you post the comments more promptly, not days later, in big batches... OKAY? Thanks.

I've had roommates that have suffered from it. but I have been fortunate to not have come in contact with it.

My ex works for a prison and contacted MRSA there. Initially he was misdiagnosed so proper precautions at home were not taken. As a result, I too got a MRSA infection and in the past four years have had four of them - one serious enough to require surgery to remove "the core". According to doctors, I am now prone to getting them at any point in my life so any time I see something that remotely looks like the beginning stages, I begin to stress. I hope that one day I will no longer get these and that something is developed to cure them once and for all.

I have also never had smallpox, or influenza, or polio, or a number of other diseases. Why is this even being asked?
Paul
We really need to educate the public about the incidence of this in nursing homes, hospital and among incarcerated populations . Our enemies are describving it as a new gay plague and accusing us of endangering others .

I had a MRSA infection in Oct 2006. This is some nasty scary stuff! The CDC should be doing more about this. Alerting the public and raising education and awareness. I think an epidemic is upon us...
Al Polk
Infection began on the top of my right foot, began to spread throughout my leg. Surgery required to remove the infection from the top of the foot, was cycled through intravenous antibiotics, had 7-day hospital stay. Have had periodic skin breakouts since.

It's a nasty infection as I have had it on 4 different places on my body. The sores look like insect bites and there's really no home remedy for it. You must see a doctor for treatment.
Anonymous
No, my immune system is strong and I am very careful with hand washing and general cleanliness. I don't think that I am particularly susceptible to it anyway, any more or less so than anyone else.

Here's another excuse for fitness centers to raise their membership rates again to clean the gyms / locker rooms / saunas as thoroughly as they SHOULD HAVE been doing for years -- thanks to fitness center owners for cutting corners on proper cleaning processes those places are among the highest MRSA colonization locations.

I'm still waiting for poll questions that are relevant to me and my life.

WTF is a MRSA infection? It strikes me that if its something one could have and still be "undecided" about, it must not be too bad.
Brent
I know that this is something that plagues hospitals and dorm rooms.
This is my first year to live on campus and the school takes it VERY seriously.
If you look up MRSA virus on WIKIPEDIA, they have a ton of information. When I first saw the poll, I didn't recognize the name, but it is a very antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Read up on it, it's interesting stuff!
Anonymous
I don't even know what that is?

Don't pop zits in the bathtub ever...nearly killed me and put me in the hopsital for a week and I'm healthy otherwise.

Yes. I have had a MRSA infection, which was kind of ironic because I warned one of our GLBT newspapers about it years ago and they wrote a story featuring the issue. Little did I know it would happen to me. My doctor told me I was really lucky, because the MRSA that I had was treatable with antibiotics. Otherwise I could easily have died from it---like a friend of mine did, when he went into the hospital and caught it there. How did I get it? I have no idea. I had been consciously trying to avoid situations where I might contract it.
Cindy
No, nor have I had any sexually transmitted disease (which MRSA is NOT) like AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, hepatitis, HPV, crabs, scabies, etc. I've been lucky not to catch MRSA because you can get that anytime, anywhere, from anyone. I think the Advocate is trying to sensationalize the issue by making it a poll question, since it's already been established that it's neither an STD or a stereotypical "gay disease". It's one of those things that EVERYONE gets.
Eric
I got it in the hospital, after having a toe amputated.
Anonymous
no...but I've had my fair share of crabs. now where did I put that bottle of RID shampoo?
Californian
The human race has to get rid of its "take a pill for everything" mentality. Overuse of antibiotics has bred the strains of bacteria super-resistant to antibiotics. We can no longer assume that we can take a pill and all our diseases will go away.
