A President to Be Proud Of?
John White

For the last seven and a half years, our community has endured the indignities of a a president who proclaimed himself "tolerant" of gays during his first campaign. Nothing James Kirchick put forth in "A President to Be Proud Of" convinced me that Senator McCain's GLBT policies would be a departure from that of President Bush. In fact, with the exception of Senator McCain's position on the Federal Marriage Amendment (which was based on his opposition to amending the Constitution, rather than support of the GLBT community), the author confirmed McCain's dismal voting record when it comes to GLBT issues. Perhaps this is why the Human Rights Campaign gives McCain a 33% rating when it comes to his support of legislation favoring our community - in contrast to an 89% rating for each of the Democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. I think most readers, even those who are not inclined to do independent research, will find enough in James Kirchick's article to convince them to vote for either of the two current Democratic candidates instead of McCain during the presidential election. As for me, the only way I will give Senator McCain another look is by way of my rear-view mirror.
