While Michael Sam being openly gay in the NFL was big news, he tells Oprah Winfrey in a new interview that "There's a lot of us out there."
The defensive end made history as the first openly gay man to be drafted by an NFL team -- the St. Louis Rams -- but was eventually cut, and then cut by the Dallas Cowboys, which had briefly picked him up for its practice squad.
In a documentary set to air on Saturday at 9 p.m., he tells Winfrey, "There's a lot of us out there. I'm not the only one. I'm just the only one who's open."
Sam made headlines immediately after being drafted when reports surfaced that he was the subject of a documentary reality series to air on Winfrey's network. That project was quickly scuttled after criticism the show's cameras might become a distraction.
