Bernie Sanders danced his way onto the Ellen Show and had her audience roaring in laughter.
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders taped an appearance onEllenWednesday that showcased skills the politician has rarely shown: his dancing moves and sense of humor.
As part of the show's tradition, Sanders danced his way on stage, to the tune of The Trammps' "Disco Inferno." The show also tweeted a silent clip of Sanders warming-up backstage. Once he made it to the couch, the senator from Vermont good-naturedly answered the host's questions with some jokes. Known for his serious demeanor and not his sense of humor, the politician bantered his way through the segment with ease.
Asked if he'd ever been in handcuffs, he responded with "I don't know exactly what you mean by that." As the audience laughed, he confirmed he had, saying "When I was young, I was involved in a civil rights demonstration, and I was arrested."
Degeneres joined the fun responding, "All right, let's call it a civil rights demonstration."
Sanders, who may be best known for decrying the media's tendency to ignore important economic and civil rights issues in favor of celebrity gossip and hyped up controversies, even answered the banal tradition of asking presidential candidates whether they wear boxers or briefs. Sanders wears briefs.
Asked what Ben & Jerry's would name an ice cream flavor made in his honor, the candidate quipped "Burn Bernie Burn" prompting Degeneres to ask "So, it would be hot and spicy ice cream?"
While in Southern California, Sanders announced his campaign had raised $2.5 million since the debate at a fundraiser in West Hollywood featuring actor and comedian Seth McFarlane, and taped an appearance on the HBO talk show Real Time with Bill Maher. That show will air on Friday night at 10pm Eastern.
