In one of the best meet-cutes ever, married couple Emily Therese Cloyd and Stacy Cloyd met while competing on Jeopardy! and eventually fell in love.
Emily, a climate change scientist, shared their love story in an epic Twitter thread as part of an ode to the game show's host, Alex Trebek, who has stage 4-pancreatic cancer.
As their story goes, the Washington D.C.-based wives met in D.C. at the Jeopardy! audition after having passed the online test. When Stacey told others she'd traveled from Ann Arbor, Mich., for the audition, Emily took note, since she was studying at the University of Michigan at the time.
"After the audition session ended, I followed Stacy on to the elevator and introduced myself as a fellow Michigan alumna and suggested that she get in touch when she moved to town," Emily told Insider.
Months later, the women ended up not only at the same taping (Jeopardy! shoots several shows in a day), but they competed against one another.
Stacy won their game but it's safe to say that they both won having met each other. A few months later, their episode aired in 2010 and the women made a plan to host a joint viewing party in D.C. What began as a friendship turned into a romance.
"We both started hoping that there might be something more, but we went through a few rounds of missed or crossed signals on both of our parts," Emily said. "Eventually, Stacy asked me out -- on a date, not hanging out as friends -- in September."
The women were engaged two years after they met and married in 2012. The invited Trebek to the wedding, who did not attend but who wrote back, "All the best and thank you."
"We weren't expecting him to attend, so we weren't surprised that his answer was no," Emily wrote. "But we really appreciated the short note wishing us the best for our marriage."
